LANDOVER, Md.—While nearly everything went right for the Seahawks in a 38-14 road victory over the Commanders, they did see a couple of defensive starters exit early due to injury.
Starting middle linebacker Ernest Jones IV suffered a knee injury late in the first half that caused him to miss the rest of the game, while cornerback Josh Jobe exited in the first half due to a concussion, the result of an accidental hit from teammate Ty Okada as both players attempted to make a tackle.
Jones was animated on the sideline cheering his team on throughout the second half, hopefully an indicator that the injury isn't serious, and Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after the game that, while they don't have a timetable yet for the injury, it is not a season-ending type of injury.
"Ernest has a bit of a knee. It's not season ending, but we'll see how it goes," Macdonald said.
Asked if Jones could miss any upcoming games, Macdonald said. "There's a chance, we'll see."
Jobe, meanwhile, will have to clear the league's concussion protocol before he can return.
With Jones injured, Drake Thomas switched helmets to be the "green dot" player, the one who receives defensive calls from Macdonald. Tyrice Knight came in as the other middle linebacker and finished with a team high nine tackles.
Macdonald was impressed by the way the defense continued to play well even after losing a couple of important players.
"You lose your mike linebacker at the end of the half, and you come out and still play good defense in the second half—this team that we're playing is an elite second, third, fourth-quarter team," Macdonald said. "I don't know what their point differential is, but it was really high, especially in the second half, so we needed to close the game out after that first half. For our defense to go out there and really not skip a beat until the fourth quarter was tremendous. That takes everybody. That's our coaches making the correct adjustments, that's the guys going in—Tyrice Knight ended up with nine tackles, I'm really proud of him coming in and playing good football."
