Featuring postgame quotes from the following:
Head Coach Dave Canales
Watch on https://www.panthers.com/video/
Opening Statement First and foremost, got to give a lot of credit to the Seahawks, coming out here, playing tough all day, coming up with some big conversions throughout the day. And then from there I just got to talk about our defense and the amazing game they played to give us opportunities offensively. We didn't do anything with those. Part of that was just the Seahawks having great scheme playing together, making things difficult on us, but we made mistakes. We made mistakes on the offensive side and when you play a good team like this, you have to be able to take advantage. You have to do things right and that's what we have to look at in front of us there.
On how WR Tetairoa McMillan's illness impacted the game and what happened on QB Bryce Young's interception
(McMillan) was playing his butt off out there. He looked fast. He was doing everything. If anything, I would say just schematically just trying for me and for [Offensive Coordinator] Brad [Idzik], just trying to figure out ways to make sure we create access and opportunities for T-Mac [WR Tetairoa McMillan]. I didn't see a drop in his game in terms of his performance and all that. I love the fact that he was able to get out there for his teammates and do what he did. The interception, underthrown slightly there in zone. [S Julian] Love played it low to high. Came up underneath it. We thought we had a nice concept to the boundary right there. There was some space and I think [QB] Bryce [Young] would be the first one to tell you he would like to be able to put that ball on a line on the inside right there.
On why the offense wasn't able to stretch the field against the Seattle defense
They did a great job having discipline, staying deep on a lot of our concepts. I think what you saw is a lot of balls go to the check-downs in different ways. They rallied up and tackled us really well. We didn't end up getting a lot of yards out of some of those check-downs, but when they play it right and the defense plays from depth and they stay on top and disciplined. It wasn't for a lack of trying. We called some passes to try to go down the field, and they did a great job of making the ball get to the check-down and rallied up and made some tackles.
On his emotions and the emotions of the locker room after the game after seeing that Tampa Bay lost
Yeah, we definitely feel the missed opportunity, but at the same time, we know what's in front of us. It's clearly defined. It was going to come down to this game, us handling our business and facing the [Tampa Bay] Bucs [Buccaneers] one more time on the last game of the season. Couldn't ask for a better situation
for this. The guys are excited and fired up about that and we got to get over the fact that we missed an
On CB Jaycee Horn's facemask penalty
It was unfortunate. He rallies up to make a tackle. He didn't really pull the facemask but there's contact there, you know. He grasped it a little bit and the official called it the way he saw it. Really unfortunate it happened in that situation where we could have had a chance to get the ball back and try to do something.
On how he will address the missed opportunities and bounce back from this loss
Yeah, it's going to come down to some really basic stuff. From what I could tell live, just whether it was formationally or whether it was just the technique that was involved in what we were asking them to do, we have to make sure we clear those things up so we can play our best ball. Especially when you're playing a really good defense, we have to be sharp (and) we have to be on our stuff.
On his assessment of QB Bryce Young in today's game
I thought he was competing and he was making the ball go where it was supposed to be. Other than the interception, he was competing and giving us an opportunity and operating in what we were asking him to do. I'll have to look at the film to get a full grade on it but I saw him out there competing. Making some plays with his legs. Critical fourth down right there on the touchdown drive to be able to get us a new set of downs so that we can stay in the flow of it.
On WR Xavier Legette's offensive offsides penalty
Yeah, the official tried to warn him. He was telling him he had his foot there. He was trying to let him know and [WR] Xavier [Legette] didn't see what he was doing and thought he was okay on that, so we got to clean that up.
On if he is still confident in WR Xavier Legette
Just keep playing ball. Keep playing ball, keep working on the fundamentals.
On if he looked at the Tampa Bay score during the game
Not at all. For us it was going to be about playing this game all the way through the duration of it and right until the game got 17 points away from us there at the end, like down 10 points with time on the clock felt like we had a good opportunity to make that happen. They got a big sack on us to really create a fourth-and-long situation. They made it difficult there, but for me, it was just, like, let's compete. Let's find a way to win. We need all those reps. We need everything we can. Every series matters for this group, so wanted to try to take this thing as far as we could.
On the decision to take a knee at the end of the game
Yeah, ran the ball on the first one, and for me, like at that point, 17 points down with the amount of time we had, the important thing for me is to make sure we get to this next game healthy at that point. My brain never went there before that drive, but once they scored that last touchdown, I knew what it was. And [RB] Rico [Dowdle] looked good today running the ball when he had chances to touch it and so did [RB] Chuba [Hubbard]. I just wanted to make sure that we're able to go into this next game at full strength.
opportunity with the Bucs losing that game, but our focus has to go to the next one really quickly.
On if he requested for the Tampa Bay score not be shown in the stadium during the game
They gave me an option, and I really want to treat it like any other game. I wanted to make sure our guys were focused on the task at hand. It's every play, every series that matters right there. Didn't want anybody looking around trying to figure out what was happening based on the score of that one. Let's play our best football. That's the got to be the focus.
On the injury status of TE Ja'Tavion Sanders and how losing Sanders impacted the game
Yeah, definitely took some of our game out of there. We were table to use [OL] Jake Curhan a little bit in some of those spots. [TE] JT [Ja'Tavion Sanders] suffered a broken ankle, so he's going to get surgery tomorrow, I believe, and we're going to miss him a lot because he's been so versatile, a guy that we can really count on.
On what he and Offensive Coordinator Brad Idzik could have done differently on offense
Yeah, just try to isolate the safeties maybe one-on-one in the middle of the field. They did a great job matching us on the outside and Coach [Mike] Macdonald did a great job of mixing the types of coverages. Played a little bit more man than they had shown on film. So where we're trying to attack some of the fire zones and different things like that, we shifted to some more run-away type of concepts in case they threw the man out there. So I think it's just a combination of things, dialing in when they are making this transition, where are those oddballs coming from and making sure we can execute in those spots.
On if he's worried about having to continuously bounce back after losses and the morale of the team
It's just who we are. The guys will look at the film and we'll be able to make some corrections and move forward and that's been the response from this group. I don't expect anything different this week.
On how his mindset these past few weeks has prepared him and the team for the division matchup with Tampa in Week 18
To have that mindset, to know that each game truly is a championship opportunity. Here we had one today against a fabulous team and we couldn't ask for a better situation here to see where we're at and to see if we can call it up and play a really good team and come away with it. We weren't able to do that but we have another opportunity in front of us. The guys will be used to having this championship mindset. The way I see it is we've been playing playoff football for over a month and every single one of these games has mattered. That's the approach that we have to take. It heightens the focus and the guys come in ready to work.
On if he has a preference whether the Week 18 game is a Saturday or Sunday game
Either way I know that if you play Saturday, if we do win that game, it allows you to kind of have a normal week of prep in case you are the Saturday wildcard so there's an advantage there. But
Quarterback Bryce Young
Watch on https://www.panthers.com/video/
On the challenges for the offense today against Seattle
Just didn't execute. Ton of credit to the defense, they dead a great job. Offensively, we let them down today. That sucks, obviously it starts with me. We all take ownership. Had opportunities with the defense helping us out there. Didn't take advantage of them. We give credit to our opponent. It's a good team so obviously we respect them as well. Just didn't execute on offense.
On his feelings after learning that Tampa Bay lost the game (against Miami) and the team did not capitalize on an opportunity to win the division
Yeah, we don't deal on hypotheticals. We're all about just winning today. We just want to go 1-0 today. Didn't get that done. That's what sucks. But blessing is we have an opportunity. For us, we get to start the playoffs a week early. This is what we wanted, what we were excited for. So we'll have a quick 24 [hours]. We'll come back tomorrow, make sure we grow from it and we'll flush it. Again, we get to start [the playoffs] one week early, so we're grateful for that opportunity.
On if the Panthers have an advantage since they beat Tampa in Week 16
You don't get any advantages in this league. It's always going to be a new game, a new 60 minutes. We have a ton of respect for them [Tampa Bay Buccaneers]. These division opponents, you always got to flush it. It's always fun being able to play those chess games knowing you play someone twice, but there's no advantage based on the outcome. It's going to be a great challenge for us, so we're excited for the opportunity.
On if the up-and-down nature of the season has prepared the team to bounce back
Yeah, we don't get to pull from anything. We're confident in who we are. We know what we're capable of but that doesn't entitle us to anything. We have to have the best week of preparation yet because it's the next game. We have to earn the right to go out and try to perform next week the way we want to so we're going to focus on that. Again, we all believe in each other. We all have the confidence in the world. Now once we turn the page on this one, it'll just be about focusing day-to-day.
On the importance of this being a player-led team
Yeah, again, we just got to flush it. All our credit goes to the opponent. We're competitors. No one likes to lose. No one is happy about today. But in this league, you got to flip the page. We got to be able to turn it. We got to start the playoffs a week early. We wanted an opportunity. We have that opportunity. Now we have to make sure we embrace it. We take advantage of it. We do the work necessary. Just message is, again, just flush it, come back ready to learn tomorrow and then let's focus on having a great week of practice.
On if it was surprising how much man coverage the Seahawks played
Yeah, again, credit to them. They made adjustments. They came out with a game plan. They did a better job of executing it than we did. That's the league. You're going to go up against different schemes. People are going to make adjustments and we didn't do a good enough job of being able to react to that and counter it. We'll watch the film. We'll learn and grow from it. That's the NFL.
On what the up-and-down nature of the season has been like for him given his level-headed demeanor
For us, it's just been opportunities to be able to go to the next day. We've had whatever. You've had highs. You've had lows. For us, [Head] Coach [Dave Canales] talks about it all the time -- just being consistent, be in love with the process and for us, that doesn't change. Regardless of the outcome, the day, week, whatever it is before, we're focused on the process so I always take that mindset.
On how the team's playoff mindset has prepared them for the Week 18 matchup with Tampa Bay
Yeah, [Head] Coach [Dave Canales] has done a great job of just putting that on the table, giving us that challenge and us accepting that. I have all the confidence in the world in this team. We understand the moment. Again, right now when we come back, we'll watch the film and it'll just be about that process.
It'll just be about having the best Monday, tomorrow, we can, and then as it goes deeper in the week, again, I wouldn't want to be in this position with any other team.
On his interception
Yeah, bad decision, bad throw. I wear that, obviously. Never want to give the team the ball back. Never want to turn the ball over, especially where they got it back at. I take full accountability for that, so, again, I'll watch the film. I'll learn from it and grow and then we'll turn the page.
On if there was a miscommunication with WR Tetairoa McMillan on Young's interception
No, no. Again, that's all on me. [WR] T-Mac [Tetairoa McMillan] won the settle. He's a super savvy player understanding coverage, and that was what I expected. He did a great job getting that. That all falls on my shoulders. Watch the film, learn from it and then turn the page.
On if he noticed that WR Tetairoa McMillan was suffering from an illness today
No, no, [WR] T-Mac [Tetairoa McMillan] is a warrior. He's someone who's not going no go out there and you wouldn't be able to tell [he was sick]. He had great energy. He was being special as he always is. Things didn't go the way that we all wanted it to go today. He's someone that's going to battle through things like that. So it's really great to see him have that mindset through what he was fighting through.
On if this team can bounce back again next week against Tampa Bay
That's the goal. Again, fresh. We're not looking at the past. There's nothing in this league that entitles you to the next. Once we have this 24 [hours], we're going to go and grow. The goal is always to go 1-0. That'll be the same and it'll start with having the best week of practice that we can have so we're all excited for the process.
WR Tetairoa McMillan

On how he felt this morning with the illness
Just kind of woke up with a little sickness, feeling under the weather. I knew I wanted to play so I just came in as early as possible to just try to get ahead of it.
On if he felt 100 percent out there today
Yeah, I felt fine. I was alright.
On what his symptoms were
I was congested, body fatigue. Just tired.
On what he attributes the offense's slow start to
I'm not too sure, but I just feel like that's just a collective effort. We've all got to be better, we've all got to do our part and make plays.
On what he saw on QB Bryce Young's interception that was intended for him
Honestly, that was a look that we got all week. We practiced that look and that play and you know, sometimes come game time, it just doesn't work out and that's on all of us. That's on me and Bryce. Whether it was a bad ball or not, I've got to go back to the ball and make a play.
On how confident he is in the team in bouncing back next week
I'm pretty confident. I feel like we have been doing it all year and it's nothing that we haven't seen already. I'm just looking forward to the last game of the regular season and seeing how we come out.
On how the Seahawks running more man coverage impacted the Panthers' offense
I think it just caught us by surprise. Obviously, it puts more pressure on the quarterback because you know, they get back there faster. At the same time, it's up to the receivers to get open, to create a clear picture for [QB] Bryce [Young] and I feel like we didn't do that good of a job.
On playing Tampa Bay next week with the division on the line
Just leaning on all of us older guys and just understanding the moment. Understanding that true – I just keep saying win or go home. Leaning on all of the other guys in here who have been in the playoffs and have been in those environments. Tampa always has a great crowd, and it's going to be nothing short of that when we get down there – whatever day it is when we get down there.
On finding out that Tampa Bay lost today
After post-game messages. They kept it off of the scoreboards up there for a reason. We've got to focus on ourselves. Once all of the messages and stuff were done it was like, 'Shoot, missed another one.' That's what it is. Again, ultimately, it's on us. We've got to get it done. It's the best part of this game.
On how much fun this week is going to be
That's why we play this game. Everything we do, as hard as football is, as much time that we put in for three hours on a Sunday. It's the best thing in the world. So, I just constantly remind the guys to just have fun. As stressful as football is, as much as it hurts the body, it is the most fun you're going to have in this life. I guarantee it.
On if head coach Dave Canales told him he wasn't going to have other game scores posted
No. I think you could probably just get there on your own. The guy, just being around him – it's on us. We're not worried about other outcomes. We take care of ourselves. That's the message he [Dave Canales] constantly preaches. It's all about us. It's always going to be all about us, and that's not going to change. And here we are, Week 18, that ultimate moment of – it's all about us.
On feeling like it was going to come down to Week 18
Yeah, and I think that's just how it goes. That's why the league puts these division games at the end. They want these moments, and I know there's a few others across the board. This league is competitive for a reason. It's going to be about who shows up for three hours come Saturday or Sunday.
CB Jaycee Horn
Watch on https://www.panthers.com/video/
On the playoff mindset with a win or go home game next week
Just doing the same thing we've been doing. We've been pushing that message and having a playoff mindset for a minute now. So just getting back to work, doing the same thing that we've been doing.
On his role as a leader to ensure that message gets across to the team
Just do what we've been doing. As soon as we got done with the game, Bryce [Young], DB [Derrick Brown], everybody was like, let's move on to next week, before Coach even got in here. That's just a testament to what kind of leaders we've got in this locker room and our mindset. So we're looking forward to next week.
On the facemask penalty called against him in the fourth quarter
I just got my hands too high. As soon as I hit his facemask, I tried to let go and he kind of sold it a little bit. I hit his face mask and I felt like I didn't clinch, I didn't see the replay. But yeah. They called it, I got to have my hands lower, just get them both down, especially in that down and distance. When I saw the flag, I knew it was going to be a face mask.
On his confidence that the team will bounce back
Super confident. I know the type of work I put in and the type of work they put in to be able to get ready for gameday and get ready for Sunday. It's about getting back to that. Pouring a little more extra into this week knowing what the stakes are, and going out there and getting a win.
On playing Tampa Bay next week
We definitely draw confidence there, they are a familiar opponent. It's going to be who goes out there and executes the best.
On stinging feelings, knowing Tampa Bay also lost today
A little bit. But our mindset was that we were going to have to go to Tampa and win anyway, so we just have to go do that.
On the emotions when finding out Tampa Bay lost today
I mean, we could've won today and clinched it, but it's onto the next week. We have to go execute next week and get a win.
On if there was a feeling that this was always going to come down to Week 18
We knew with the path the team was going on and the way our season was going that it was going to be a clutch game for us at the end. We just have to have the same mindset, go down there, and execute.
On the team having a similar scenario in 2022 when he was injured and having an opportunity to contribute this time
It's an opportunity. In this league, you've got to be grateful for opportunities. Especially being here the years where our season has been done by this point. You have to be grateful and excited
CB Mike Jackson
Watch on https://www.panthers.com/video/
On what he saw on his interception and if it brought any extra satisfaction being against his former team
I'm not going to lie, yeah. They tried a sluggo, I felt it coming. Ball was in the air, I just went and got it. It was kind of like – running back all the way down the sideline – it was kind of like, 'Look at me now.' You feel me? A lot of people used to laugh at me. I used to come in the building at 5:30 in the morning and it
was just kind of like, now you got to look at me. It was nice. And, just to see my dog 'K. Scott' [Seahawks defensive backs coach Karl Scott] frustrated walking down the sideline – that was nice.
On the team's mindset after the game knowing that the Buccaneers lost and the division could have been won today
To be honest, it really doesn't mean nothing because we were supposed to win today, and we didn't. But at the same time, next week is very, very important, so it's a real playoff game. Win or go home. So, at the end of the day, that's all that matters.
On what the defense can take away from today's performance
We know who we are on defense. We played well, but we still let some plays get away from us, so it's like we just have to be consistent. That's a playoff team, and that's kind of how playoff games go, so it's just like we got to be ready to go toe-to-toe for four quarters.
On what it means to have an opportunity to win the division next week
It really doesn't mean anything because we haven't got it – we haven't won the division yet. Once we go do that, then we can somewhat pat ourselves on the back, but right now it doesn't mean nothing.
On if there is an advantage to playing the Buccaneers next week while they are on a losing streak
No. Games like this, nothing gets done before it matters. It's about who plays better that day. Yeah, they have been on a skid, but they are in the locker room saying like, 'We win one game, we got everything in front of us.' We just got to go out there and play good ball.
