The Seahawks lost a divisional matchup up to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, in part because of costly turnovers that set up San Francisco to score 21 points and not playing complimentary football.
Seattle had a total of four turnovers in the defeat -- two interceptions thrown by quarterback Sam Darnold, and one fumble apiece by running backs George Holani and Emanuel Wilson. All three of San Francisco's touchdowns in the first half were a result of a Seattle turnover.
On Darnold's first interception of the day, San Francisco went on an 18-yard scoring drive. Then, following Wilson's fumble, the 49ers scored on their first offensive play -- an 11-yard run by Christian McCaffrey. And right before halftime, with the Seahawks on their own 4-yard line, Holani's fumble near the goal line allowed the 49ers to recover in the end zone to extend their lead, 21-13.
"We're disappointed," head coach Mike Macdonald said. "I think our guys played hard. We stuck together. I think we got a tough team. I think we're a connected team. But in terms of playing complimentary football, the way that we want to play here as Seahawks and become the team that we want to become, we're not there yet. So good news is we have a game in four days that we can move forward and learn from and try to grow from. So that's the good news. But we need to grow quickly in terms of complimentary football, definitely taking care of the football. Way too many giveaways at this point in the season. And we'll look at those and see how we can get it fixed moving forward. So, guys played incredibly hard, but the complimentary piece of what we want to become right now is not there, so we didn't do it. And the 49ers did that today. So, give them credit. They played a good game and we'll move forward."
Despite the 49ers' 21 points scored off turnovers, the Seahawks were in a position to either tie the game and force overtime or score a touchdown to potentially walk away with a win late in the fourth quarter. Cooper Kupp nearly reached for a drive-extending first down on fourth-and-10, but a replay review had him short of the marker and a turnover on downs sealed the game.
"Shit, we're pissed," Jaxon Smith-Njigba said. "We're pissed. We wanted this one. And like I said, defense, special teams, they deserve this win. And it sucks as an offense, myself, feel like we let them down, but we're going to keep pushing. We're a team that just keeps swinging no matter what, and that's why I love this team so much."
Smith-Njigba added: "We have to stay out of our own way at the end of the day. I mean, we spotted them 21 points. Like I said, defense played incredible. It's on us to protect the ball and move the ball forward. And we have to focus on that. And I think coming into the game the first quarter, in the beginning of the game, I think is very important to protect, move the ball forward, and like I said, stay out of our own way. And I think I know we will get better at that and continue to grow."
The Seahawks know that they will be able to rebound from this loss. After last week's matchup that featured many defensive penalties, leaders of the unit had a players-only meeting to discuss how they can be better and what changes needed to be made. This week, Seattle had just one defensive penalty. So, Seattle knows how to address a problem and solve it, and the messaging from players is that they'll be better from this loss.
"We got a tough, connected, great group," Macdonald said. "We got the capacity to be a really good football team, but right now we're not doing the things to become a great team. So let's go do those things and let's go through it. Let's attack it. Let's figure out ways to get better and let's do it in a hurry because we play pretty soon."
While the Seahawks would have certainly liked to have walked away from Sunday with a win, there's no lack of trust or lack of certainty from the team.
"I feel good, honestly," Ernest Jones IV said. "I still feel the same as I did before the season started. Just little things. Little things that turned us into 3-2. We could very well be sitting in the thing, 5-0, just like them, so just little things. We just have to execute better, execute in moments. Hats off to them, they did it today, but we'll be better."
Receiver Cooper Kupp added: "I have all the confidence, all the belief in the world and the group of men that are in that locker room. The intention that they come to work with, the belief they have in one another, the way we support one another and play for one another. This is a group of guys that are chomping at the bit to get back to work. And so when we got all the right stuff, you're made up of the right stuff and you come in with the intention, the mindset, the energy that we have, you got no options but to move forward."
And a game in four days is how Seattle is going to move forward and turn their attention to.
"I think we got a lot of guys that are just eager to get back to work," Darnold said. "We're just going to put our head down, especially like I said on a short week. So got to put our heads down and get back to work and get ready for this game on Thursday."
Offensive tackle Abraham Lucas added: "We're ultra-competitive. We don't quit. We strain our asses off up until the very end [Mike Macdonald] says this too, there's a bit of urgency to take the next step and become that team that we need to be and we're gonna get there. I have all the confidence in the world and everybody here and all the guys. It's just a tough one to swallow today. Good news is we play on Thursday, so get to get back at it."
