On Tuesday, Seattle traded for receiver Rashid Shaheed, on Wednesday he was walking the halls of the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, his new home, and on Thursday, he was catching passes from the JUGS machine after practice, getting in an extra bit of work.
Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak said, "It was exciting for us. I think adding a really good player and it's up to us to get him up to speed pretty quickly here, but I also can't say enough about the guys that we have and just got to keep getting everybody better altogether."
As head coach Mike Macdonald explained on Wednesday, "It didn't feel like we were missing something, it's not like we were trying to plug holes or anything like that. It was just an opportunity to get a great player and augment what we were doing, that was it."
Quarterback Sam Darnold said, "We're really excited to have him. For me, I'm just going to continue to try to get to know him as much as possible. Throw as many routes without hurting my arm as possible to him and just continue to gain that trust and confidence in him."
Macdonald said the plan is for Shaheed to play on Sunday, but how much is still unknown. What will make this transition a little bit easier for Shaheed is that he'll be returning to a Kubiak-led offense, the same offensive coordinator he played for in 2024.
"He's going to have to learn a lot," Kubiak said. "It's not easy, but he's a pro and I think this is his fourth year and we're going to expect him to know a lot really fast."
Bringing in a new player to an already established locker room can be difficult, in making sure they mesh well with what the Seahawks have already built, but given Kubiak's history with Shaheed, he and Macdonald knew he would be a good fit.
"Rashid's a hard worker," Kubiak said. "He's a really good kid. Football's important to him. He's a really good teammate, so when you're bringing somebody on, you want to make sure they gel with what coach is building around here. Coach Macdonald and I know that he does."
Darnold said, "You can tell he's really smart. Like you said, he was in the system last year, so that helps a lot with formations and different things. So, we're just going to continue to get him up to speed as much as possible."
Shaheed, known for his speed, also plays special teams, and was named First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in 2023 as a punt returner.
"Obviously looking at the whole team, the special teams, he affects the game as a returner," Kubiak said. "I think he's a really bright player. He sees coverage, he can play a lot of spots and it's really important as a receiver."
Macdonald said Tory Horton will continue to return punts, but that they will, "train [Shaheed] at punt returner."
Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh said Shaheed has, "All kinds of speed. He's super exciting. We've seen that firsthand, he's a great catcher, he has good ball security, poised, great vision, unbelievable speed to get to the perimeter to circle the defense. But he has the unusual trait of also being willing and good at going vertical. Not all the guys that have the speed to run around the defense will also put their foot in the ground and go through the smoke, so to speak. So he brings both of those things, and we're thrilled to have him."
Joining a new offense midway into a season is not small feat, especially for a position like receiver, with learning an entire new playbook, and Darnold says Shaheed is doing all the right things to get acclimated.
"To be honest, the way that he is right now just meeting him, he seems like he's got a really good head on his shoulders. He understands what to expect in terms of the offense and all those things. So, I feel like he's done a really good job already of asking questions and being curious about his role and what we're asking him to do. He's been really good that way."
While it will take a few games to fully see how Kubiak intends to use Shaheed in games, Darnold knows Shaheed's skillset will be a huge asset.
"I think everybody knows him as a burner," he said. "He can run. He does so many different things, whether it's speed sweeps, all those things. Even just studying the New Orleans tape from last year, getting ready for this year you saw a ton of him doing a lot of things on the field that normal receivers don't do. Again, just to see the way that he runs routes too, not only just as a deep threat and speed sweep guy, but he does a lot of great things running routes and changing direction. So, we're excited to continue to get to know him in here."
Darnold added, "Anytime you've got a guy that can roll like that, it helps in a bunch of different ways. He's not just a speed guy. He's a route runner and a receiver who can do a lot of great things when he catches the ball as well."
