Familiar Faces To Meet When Seahawks Play 49ers On Sunday

It won’t quite be a family reunion when Seattle plays San Francisco on Sunday, but two brothers will be meeting on opposing sidelines for the matchup.

When Seattle plays the 49ers on Sunday, there will be a Kubiak on both sides, Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and his brother, Klay Kubiak, offensive coordinator for the 49ers.

This won't be the first time the two will be meeting on opposing sidelines. In the 2024 Klint and the New Orleans Saints traveled to San Francisco for a preseason game and Klay was the passing game specialist at the time.

"Again, it's an NFL football game," Klint said. "But, for me, it's just about getting our guys ready to go."

The two brothers usually talk very frequently but with the start of the NFL on the horizon, "Definitely not much this week at all," Klint said. "We're both pretty busy. We're worried about our own teams."

The game for Klint will also bring some familiar faces to the opposite sideline, outside of his brother. Having coached in San Francisco in 2023, Klint was the 49ers' offensive passing game coordinator and coached under Kyle Shanahan and worked with Brock Purdy.

That same season, quarterback Sam Darnold was the back up to Purdy and Darnold and Klint both credit that season for a lot of the growth Darnold has seen.

Klint said, "Coming from being a starter to taking a backup role in the way that he used it as an opportunity to improve and support Brock (Purdy) at the time. So, it just speaks a lot to him as a man. He's humble, he's a hard worker, and not surprised by his success."

After his season with the 49ers, Darnold went on to have the best season of his career, making his first Pro Bowl, throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns.

"I think the biggest thing is that I've always understood what that time meant for me," Darnold said on his time in San Francisco. "Not only as a person, but as a player as well. I always really enjoyed my time in San Francisco, but being here now in Seattle, I'm excited to have that opportunity to go against them. It's a really good organization, great players, and great coaching staff over there. So, I'm just excited for the opportunity."

When Darnold signed with Seattle he said, "Learned a ton obviously going to San Francisco, and Klint (Kubiak) was a huge part of that," he said at his first press conference as a Seahawk in March. "Just kind of understanding, okay, like -- and I really thank Brock a ton, Brock Purdy, for just his style of play and how he described his style as like, we've got a ton of great play-makers on offense. Like my job is just to play point guard and get the ball in their hands and let them go do great things with the rock. When I changed my thought process as a quarterback to kind of just getting the ball in my guys' hands, that's really kind of where it unlocked for me a little bit."
