Cody White's First NFL Touchdown: 'It Was A Special Moment'

Seahawks receiver Cody White always shines when he gets the chance and he did just that in the Seahawks' last preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

GREEN BAY, Wis.—It seems like whenever Seahawks receiver Cody White is met with a chance, he does whatever he can to shine in those moments.

Last year it was getting signed to the 53-man roster and playing in four games after spending all of the season on Seattle's practice squad. In those four games, White managed to block a punt, the first blocked punt by a Seahawks player since 2020 and added two receptions for 44 yards.

"Whenever they give me an opportunity, I'm gonna go out there and make the most of it," White said. "I got some opportunities in the second half and just made the most of them."

In Seattle's final preseason game against the Packers on Saturday, White made quite the mark in the fourth quarter. Seattle rotated through a number of players for punt return duties and White had the most impressive return of the night, a 35-yard return that ended with him hurdling a defender.

"I did hurdle him," White said. "But then I landed on my teammate. It ended up being like a 40-yard return, so that's a good thing."

Then on the second play of Seattle's drive, following the punt return, quarterback Jalen Milroe connected with White for a 25-yard reception. To cap off the drive, White scored with a 18-yard touchdown reception.

"It meant a lot," White said. "That was my first touchdown in the NFL, my one last year got called back, so it was a special moment to have that touchdown."

Head coach Mike Macdonald used a golf reference to explain how good White was on that drive.

"I told him, in golf, when you play a scramble and you get your own eagle, that's what he had on that drive. Giving him the opportunity, he makes plays. I'm happy for him. We've talked about it for two years now, but the guy's worked extremely hard and he earned that today. It was really cool."

Before the game ended, White had added one more reception to his day's stats, finishing the night with three receptions, 69 receiving yards and one touchdown.

"I feel like I've done a great job," he said. "Anytime I've been given the opportunity, I've gone out there and made plays, put my best foot forward, so that's really all you can do really in training camp."

He added, "I feel like I made the most of my opportunities…Being able to put your best foot forward, that's all you can ask."

Milroe said White is always the same player, no matter the circumstances or the location.

"Cody White is a competitor," Milroe said. "What I appreciate about him is his hunger and how he always competes. No matter where we're at. During practice when we're in Seattle and where we're at right now."
