The Seahawks were able to put together another really strong defensive performance in their Week 2 win over the Steelers, doing so despite missing two key players in their secondary, Pro-Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon and rookie safety Nick Emmanwori.
Witherspoon was sidelined by what Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald called an MCL bruise or contusion, a knee injury that caused him to miss practice last week, though Witherspoon was able to go through a pretty long pregame workout on Sunday.
Emmanwori, meanwhile, has a high ankle sprain that caused him to be ruled out of the game. Both players have a chance to return to practice this week, Macdonald said, and getting at least some practice in would be important, particularly for Emmanwori, if he's going to be able to play in Week 3.
"I would say we're optimistic," Macdonald said Monday afternoon when asked about Witherspoon and Emmanwori. "Anytime you're talking about possibly going into a game without practicing, that's a dangerous game to play, not one we want to play consistently. With Spoon, he's probably a guy that we'd be more inclined to do that with, and probably not so much with Nick. Nick probably needs more reps than Spoon right now. But we'll see, we'll see how it goes on Wednesday and Thursday with those two."
Earlier in the day during his weekly appearance on Seattle Sports 710AM, Macdonald said of Witherspoon, "Hopefully he'll practice at some point, he's probably still a guy you could take all the way to the game, but that's not really a great model to abide by."
On Emmanwori, Macdonald said, "We'll see here. We'll see if he's ready on Wednesday or possibly Thursday to get some reps."
As for new injuries coming out of the game, Macdonald said the injury report Wednesday might not be as clean as they hoped after the game when it initially looked like a mostly clean game, injury wise.
"I don't have a full update," he said. "We had some things pop up this morning, so I'll probably have more info for you on Wednesday or Thursday as the week plays out, but it wasn't as clean as we initially anticipated."
The only player who left the game due to injury was center Jalen Sundell, though Macdonald said Sunday that was due to cramps. Outside linebacker Derick Hall was also slow to get up after a low block late in the game, but Macdonald said, "D-Hall, from what I understand, he just got nicked up right there at the end, and I think he's OK. I don't know exactly what's going on with him."
