The Seahawks signed free agent kicker Jason Myers to a multi-year contract Thursday, adding a Pro-Bowl kicker to a special teams unit that already has a Pro-Bowl and first-team All-Pro punter in Michael Dickson.

Myers, 27, is signing with the Seahawks for the second time in just over a year, having signed a future contract with Seattle following the 2017 season. Myers competed with Sebastian Janikowski for the job in training camp, with Janikowski ultimately winning the job. Myers, who previously spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being released during the 2017 season, as well as the Arena Football League’s San Jose SaberCats and Arizona Rattlers, went on to enjoy a breakout season with the New York Jets last year, making 33 of 36 field-goal attempts, including 6 of 7 from 50-plus yards, including an NFL record five makes of 55-plus yards, and 30 of 33 extra points.

“I always knew what I was capable of, kicking wise,” Myers said just after signing his contract. “Getting a fresh start (in New York) really put my confidence level on a new level. When you go through what I went through the year before (in Jacksonville), you kind of get freed up more to relax and enjoy the game."

And despite getting cut by the Seahawks less than a year ago, Myers was excited to come back to Seattle.

“I felt very comfortable here from Day 1 last year,” he said. “I love the organization, what they stand for. I want to be comfortable with the guys I’m around, and I’m great friends with (long snapper Tyler) Ott and Dickson and (special teams coordinator Brian) Schneider and (assistant special teams coach Larry) Izzo. I just had Ott at my house last week to play some golf. I’m just really comfortable with those guys.”

The Seahawks will hope that Myers brings stability to a position that has seen turnover in recent years after Steven Hauschka left in free agency following the 2016 season, with Blair Walsh holding the job in 2017 and Janikowski in that spot last year. The Seahawks do have another kicker currently on the roster, Sam Ficken, who signed a future contract in January. Janikowski is currently a free agent.
