Renton, Wash. -Â The Seattle Seahawks have hired six new coaches, including four in the strength & conditioning department, named one coach to a new position title and named a new head athletic trainer, the team announced today.Â
Joining strength & conditioning assistant coach Jamie Yanchar are head strength & conditioning coach Ivan Lewis and strength & conditioning assistants Thomas Garcia, Mark Philipp and Grant Steen. On the offensive side of the ball, Austin Davis joins Seattle as an offensive assistant, Brad Idzik joins as assistant wide receivers and Steve Shimko now assumes assistant quarterbacks coach duties. Former assistant athletic trainer David Stricklin is now the team's head athletic trainer.Â
Lewis will lead the strength department and joins Seattle after serving the last five seasons as USC's head strength & conditioning coach. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and is certified by USA Weightlifting. He returns to Seattle after spending five seasons (2009-13) at the University of Washington where he was named the 2013 Samson Equipment/American Football Monthly FBS Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year.
Lewis worked under former Seahawks head strength coach Chris Carlisle from 2006-08 at USC and helped the Trojans win three Pac-10 Championships and Rose Bowls during his tenure. Â
He graduated from Idaho in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in education and earned a master's degree in leadership studies from San Diego in 2003.
Philipp comes to Seattle after one season at USC (2018) and three seasons at the University of Nebraska (2015-17) under Mike Riley. A certified strength and conditioning specialist, Philipp is also a certified Level 1 Club Coach by USA Weightlifting, in addition to being certified in functional movement screening.Â
Philipp has also worked in the strength departments of USC (2013-14) and Oregon State (2009-12) and was the team captain of the 2005 Southern Illinois football team, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 2006.
Garcia joined Seattle in 2013 and spent the last six seasons as the team's sport science specialist.Â
Steen joins the Seahawks after two years at EXOS human performance in Arizona and has also spent time with the University of Minnesota (2017), Stanford (2016), at USC with Ivan Lewis (2014-15), the University of Washington (2013) and the University of Hawaii-Manoa as a strength & conditioning assistant (2010-13).Â
Davis, who served as Russell Wilson's backup in 2017, returns to Seattle to begin his coaching career. He spent last season with the Tennessee Titans but did not play in a game. Â
Idzik, a Mercer Island High graduate who played receiver at Wake Forest, comes to the Seahawks from Stanford, where he was an offensive graduate assistant. He is the son of John Idzik, who served as Seattle's vice president of football administration from 2007-12 before becoming the general manager of the New York Jets from 2013-14.
The team also promoted David Stricklin to head athletic trainer, replacing Donald Rich. Stricklin has been with the Seahawks since 2010 as an assistant athletic trainer, and before that was an athletic trainer at Oregon State.
