RENTON, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks, in partnership with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH), the team's Official Medical Services Provider, today announced cancer awareness activities to promote early detection through the NFL's Crucial Catch: Intercept Cancer initiative. The Seahawks will host the team's annual Crucial Catch game on October 11 vs. the San Francisco 49ers. In celebration of the campaign, representatives from the Seahawks and VMFH held the annual ceremonial raising of the Crucial Catch flag at Lumen Field.
"At Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, we are honored to stand with the Seattle Seahawks and team up to support the NFL's Crucial Catch initiative," said Dr. Joseph Rosales, Executive Medical Director of Cancer Services at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH). "This campaign is a reminder that when it comes to health, we are stronger together. By offering on-site screenings at the Ticketmaster Tailgate, we want to provide our community with helpful, proactive tools to better understand their health. Whether fans are coming by to learn more about prevention, complete a screening, or ring our bell to honor a survivor, our team at VMFH is ready to tackle cancer alongside you."
Pregame in Ticketmaster Tailgate, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health will be conducting on-site lung and prostate cancer screenings for ticketed fans. Lung screenings will be done via VMFH's mobile CT trailer, and prostate screenings will be done via a simple blood test. Fans can determine if they are a candidate for a prostate cancer screening if they are:
- Age 50 for men who are at average risk of prostate cancer and are expected to live at least 10 more years.
- Age 45 for men at high risk of developing prostate cancer. This includes African American men and men who have a first-degree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than age 65).
- Age 40 for men at even higher risk (those with more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age).
Fans interested in participating in the lung cancer screening can fill out a form in advance. Screening forms can be found here: Lung Cancer Screening.
Fans in Ticketmaster Tailgate will also be able to fill out "I Celebrate" cards, gather information about cancer screenings, and cancer survivors will be able to ring the official Crucial Catch bell.
At halftime, the Seahawks will hold a Crucial Catch bell ringing ceremony on the field to honor six cancer survivors representing each of the cancers that can be detected early: breast, colorectal, cervical, lung, skin, & prostate. The bell ringing will feature a special performance by Seattle based singer-songwriter, Allen Stone.
On Tuesday, October 20, the Seahawks, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and the Muckleshoot Tribe will host an event at the Muckleshoot Community Center in Auburn focused on early cancer detection education and family-friendly football activities. The event will include dinner, photo opportunities with the Super Bowl LX Lombardi Trophy, cancer prevention insights from VMFH physicians, and youth programming.
Throughout the month of October, the Seahawks will donate 12% of the proceeds from in-store Seahawks Pro Shop purchases of official Crucial Catch gear to the Crucial Catch Fund. In partnership with VMFH, the Crucial Catch Fund will help local patients who cannot cover the incidental costs of cancer treatment. At the Crucial Catch game, $0.25 for every bottle of water purchased will be donated to the Crucial Catch Fund. Fans can also donate to the Crucial Catch Fund at Pro Shop registers or by visiting vmfh.org/CrucialCatch.
All NFL clubs support the league's mission of early detection and risk reduction. Throughout October, NFL Crucial Catch games raise awareness for cancer prevention with players, coaches, fans, and referees in apparel supporting multiple types of cancer, as well as additional on-field and in-stadium branding.
