Next Gen Stat of The Week: Seahawks Defense Suffocates 49ers Offense

NFL Next Gen Stats breaks down a dominant performance by the Seahawks defense in their Week 18 win over the 49ers.

The Seahawks went to Santa Clara not just looking to win the NFC West and clinch the NFC's top seed. They wanted to make a statement.

"We made up our mind that we were going to be the best defense in the NFL," outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu said after Seattle’s 13-3 win. "We were going to show the world tonight and that's what we did."

And the Seahawks, who finished the regular season allowing the fewest points in the league, indeed made a statement against the 49ers, who, coming into the game had one the hottest offenses in the league.

In their previous three games before facing the Seahawks, the 49ers averaged 42.3 points per game, 455.3 yards per game and 29.3 first downs per game, punting only twice in those three games. On Saturday, the Seahawks held the 49ers to a single field goal, 173 yards and nine first downs while forcing four punts, two turnovers on downs and one interception.

The 49ers were also held to their lowest point total since scoring three points in their first game under Kyle Shanahan in 2017.

In addition to the scoreboard and stat sheet painting a picture of Seahawks dominance, the advanced stats tell a similar story.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the 49ers offense had a -0.46 expected points added per play, their lowest mark of the season, and their 40.5 success rate was their third-lowest mark of the season.

Running back Christian McCaffrey, meanwhile, was limited to 23 yards on eight carries with a 25.0 percent success rate, his second lowest of the season, and it was his first game since 2022 without forcing at least one missed tackle (minimum eight carries).

The Seahawks also bottled up San Francisco's passing game, with Brock Purdy attempting zero deep passes for the first time this season.
