SAN FRANCISCO—The day after his first Super Bowl win, head coach Mike Macdonald approached a podium inside the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco after an introduction by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Macdonald was no longer wearing his M.O.B chain, a chain every player on the team was gifted, or his championship shirt, but he still was smiling from ear to ear on Monday morning.
The Seahawks enjoyed a 29-13 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots. In Sunday's win, the stars of the game were Kenneth Walker III, who was named Super Bowl MVP, as well as the entire defense. Macdonald spent Saturday worrying about the game plan, different plays and how the flow of the game was going to go.
"I told the team on Saturday night I got a bad habit of, himming and hawing in my office, with the rest of our coaching staff," Macdonald said. "Thinking about plays and what we're going to run and how it's gonna go, and then and then you get around the guys, and you see them, and all of a sudden, all those worries kind of go away, magically, and I think that speaks to how they played. It became very clear very early that they were a determined bunch that we were going to play our style ball last night and at that point, really, the plays became irrelevant. It was really the style of how the guys played, just to play that relentlessly throughout the game was really impressive and really proud of those guys that played in it. That was a remarkable game by our defense."
Now after winning the Super Bowl and putting the league on notice that the team, especially the defense is the "best in the world," Seattle will now have something of a target on their back as a result. And to combat that, Macdonald said the team will just stick to their core principles.
"We use the term chasing edges here in Seattle," Macdonald said. "You have to live like that. You can't be copying everybody else. We want to be on the forefront of things. We know that we're target number one now, but again, it's really going to be our mentality for us to keep pushing the envelope with our personnel, where we can take things, at our speed, you know, and so, there's gonna be times where we feel like teams get a beat on us, and we're gonna have to move and shake, and that's happened several times throughout this season as well. And that's just how we operate."
To even get to Sunday, another core principle Seattle had to stick to was stacking wins.
"When you talk about stacking and stacking wins, which is one of our core philosophies, you have to believe and have faith in the power of doing that over the course of time. So you can take really any element of our team and you can kinda go back to that philosophy… There's always some part of your team you're trying to attack, and improve on, but if you stick to the process, and the process is right, then the results will get to where you want. I think what you saw [on Sunday] is just the end point of a team that has been dedicated to become this team since we walked in the door in April, and it started with our offseason program, then it went to training camp and how they operated the offseason and we just did it week by week."
