The Seattle Seahawks are now two-time Super Bowl champions because they were the most complete team in the NFL during the season that was completed on Sunday. But the team's well-rounded attack involved even more than just a dominant defense and a superb performance from Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III. These Seahawks were authentic champions because they valued all essential details of the game, and every personnel grouping.
In Super Bowl LX, a Seahawks special teams unit that has been regarded as a top-level component of its success shared in the spotlight. Under special teams head coach Jay Harbaugh and assistant special teams coach Devin Fitzsimmons, the 'Hawks had all the right ingredients to elevate the team to its first title win in 11 years.
"What this organization does is treat special teams as an actual third of what the game is," said kicker Jason Myers, who delivered a record-setting performance in the 29-13 win over the New England Patriots. You have Jay Harbaugh leading us in what he does, and the guys buy in and we have guys that take pride in special teams. There's been games all year where we've either flipped games or started the onslaught."
Myers was definitely a spark in what became an eventual onslaught of the Patriots, as his three field goals in the first half gave the Hawks a nine-point halftime lead that would never be relinquished.
The five field goals from Myers set a new Super Bowl record, and according to Sportradar, the 180 total yards traveled on his field goals also set another Super Bowl record. Special teams partner Michael Dickson indicated that Myers' performance was so impressive, more than one Super Bowl MVP award should have been considered.
"We need multiple MVPs," Dickson said. "K9 went off, he's incredible."
Dickson then added how proud he was to play with such a prolific teammate, who set yet another league record with 206 points scored in a season, including the playoffs.
"He's elite. The attention that goes into the detail with him, it's really cool to see. It's really cool to share this experience with him," Dickson said. "We're already celebrating because he set the record in the Super Bowl."
For Myers, the road to a Super Bowl title was not always an easy one to navigate. He said that he was a "late bloomer" as a football kicker. He eventually worked his way through a season in the Arena Football League. Myers was undrafted by the NFL and finally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015 after being invited to a Senior Bowl tryout. Although he played at Marist College and took a unique path to the NFL, he was very glad how everything turned out.
"I never thought I'd be in the NFL and to win a Super Bowl is an amazing feeling. You just keep working and can do what you want," Myers said. "I remember the first time I kicked a football. I just fell in love with it. Glad I made the switch from soccer to kicking footballs."
After winning it all, Myers was very happy to share the championship joy with his former New York Jets teammate Sam Darnold. He also wore green and white with Darnold at the beginning of the quarterback's career.
"Sam's been the same guy from 2018 when I played with him with the Jets until now. That's what this organization is all about, is just building up people and lifting up their confidence and letting them know they're appreciated. Obviously, he took us to the promised land." Myers said.
While the Seahawks defense harassed and shut down Drake Maye all day, and Walker performed spectacularly in the biggest game of his career, Myers knew that he and Dickson would be ready when the moments called for both of them to make significant contributions to earning the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday. He said that his approach to a key role on the game's brightest state may have sounded cliché, but was fully applicable.
"As a specialist, you can't really force the game. You get limited opportunities. Whenever your number is called you have to go out there and do your best. I honestly go one kick at a time, so whatever happens," Myers said.
Dickson also showed admirable poise and tremendous grasp of his craft as his punting work held New England to just four return yards. On seven punts, Dickson averaged 47.9 yards per kick and put three of inside the New England 10-yard line. Two were downed inside the five-yard line and another skipped out of bounds at the six.
"He's the best in the world in what he does and he proved it today," Myers said.
Dickson was also fully set to make his mark on the game when he was summoned to pin New England back as far as possible. When he was able to set the Pats back near their goal line, Dickson's teammates closed in to heartily congratulate him.
"I always want to give my defense the best field position. It was cool hitting it inside the 10 a few times and getting the boys around me. It was special," Dickson said.
When it was over, Dickson became the second-ever Australian player to play in and win a Super Bowl. As he was entering the postgame press conference, Dickson was wrapping up a celebratory conversation on FaceTime with his closest friends back home.
"It's surreal," he said. "All my boys back in Sydney were watching the game. They're all pumped."
Dickson, who rounded into prime form at the University of Texas, was named to the Seahawks’ 50th anniversary all-time team this season, He was able to hold dangerous Patriots returner Marcus Jones to just two returns that did not even total five yards.
"The main thing he was doing was he had a good punt toward the sideline, or it was just high up, so I had to fair catch," Jones said.
Dickson added that he welcomed the support of the fans who realized and praised his efforts in the franchise's second Super Bowl triumph.
"I'm glad you guys can appreciate some punts," he said, addressing the 12s through the media. "Sometimes it's a position that gets overlooked."
Kickers and punters sometimes live in an NFL world where outsiders often believe they are separated from the realm of the regular position players. But both Myers and Dickson said that their teammates don't treat them any differently and have made them feel like integral parts of a Super Bowl team that will live forever in franchise lore.
We're going to be 60 years old and doing reunions and stuff, and I'm so happy to be doing it with this group," Dickson said. "We're so lucky that we're this close and get to share a ring together."
Again, Myers said that while it might come off as just another sound bite, he truly felt like an inner circle member of the Super Bowl 60 champions this season.
"It feels weird how many times you say it, how close this team is. You think you're just forcing that, and saying that, but honestly, since April, this team has been extremely tight. That really carried us through the entire year," Myers said. "We do a lot of off-field stuff together. There's no egos on this team."
One of those teammates that plays a very important part in the success of Dickson and Myers is third-year long snapper Chris Stoll, who also went undrafted and has emerged as a highly valuable special teams core player.
"Stollie, he's the best in the world," Dickson said. "Some of the snaps today, they felt like a video game. They came out so perfectly."
So now Myers and Dickson will always and eternally be known as Super Bowl champions. So had the feeling of getting ready to slip a championship ring on sunk in during the postgame? And how do they intend to celebrate?
"It still doesn't feel real," Myers said. I think in a couple of weeks when I go home and see my family and friends, maybe it will settle in a little bit more. Watching the brothers that you put so much work in together succeed and make it to this spot in life, it's an amazing feeling."
Dickson had a simple way to let the championship aura wrap around him after the win.
"If we just spent three days in the locker room and hung out, I'd be happy to do that," Dickson said. "I'm so lucky to get to experience this. As a human, to get to experience this type of feeling, not many people get it, so I'm super grateful."
