The Seahawks were back in action Saturday following a day off, getting back to work after Thursday's preseason tie with the Raiders.

After getting a chance to review the game film, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald came away impressed by the effort on display Thursday night even if the second half execution wasn't quite there to get a victory after leading 16-3 at halftime.

"Just the effort, especially with the backups," Macdonald said when asked what stood out. "The guys just played really hard, tried to play as physical as possible, a lot of great execution, a lot of great stuff on tape. And to show the vets and the guys who didn't play in the game who flashed, who did the cool stuff, it was a fun team meeting."

1. Updates on Uchenna Nwosu, Tyrice Knight and other injuries.

The Seahawks continue to be without outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu, who opened camp on the physically unable to perform list, the result of offseason knee surgery following the season. Macdonald didn't have an update on when Nwosu will return to on-field work, but said the veteran pass rusher is getting in good work in his rehab process.

"No update on Chenna, but he's kicking butt, "Macdonald said. "Matter of fact, he's going so hard that we've got to slow him down."

Starting linebacker Tyrice Knight, who left practice last week with a knee injury, is recovering from that, but also has a separate medical issue that will keep him out for a bit, though Macdonald said he expecting Knight back for the regular season.

"Tyrice, he's getting close with his knee," Macdonald said. "He also has another medical issue that we're working through right now. We're not going to give you all the details on it, but we're working through it, and we expect him to be back for the opener. But it's going to be a couple of weeks.

Center Olu Oluwatimi, who has been dealing with a back injury took part in the early part of practice, but was held out after his back tightened up.

"He gave it a go today, and it just tightened up on him a little bit, so just out of precaution we shut him down earlier in practice," Macdonald said. "So probably tomorrow or early in the week hopefully."

Also dealing with a back injury is long snapper Chris Stoll. Macdonald said, Stoll "is still working through his back. Getting better."

2. Quarterbacks throwing on the move is a big part of Klint Kubiak's offense, and they have quarterbacks who excel at that.

When the Seahawks signed Sam Darnold, one of the traits they liked about him is an ability to make accurate throws on the run, because moving quarterbacks out of the pocket is a big part of Klint Kubiak's offense.

Darnold had a couple of nice throws on the move again on Saturday, as did Drew Lock, who had one of his better days of practice, particularly when targeting rookie tight end Elijah Arroyo, including one long gain down the left sideline on a perfectly placed throw from Lock, who was rolling to his left. Rookie Jalen Milroe showed the same ability in Thursday's game, firing a strike on the move to receiver Tyrone Broden for a 15-yard gain.

"That was one of the reasons we we're really excited about Sam is his ability to throw on the move and his accuracy on the move," Maconald said. "And Drew had a great throw today moving to his left, on the sideline, threw a dime with a guy in his face. That was a heck of a throw, I can't wait to see that one again. Both guys have the agility, we saw Jalen do it in the game on one of the movements, so all three guys can move and throw on the run."

3. The competition is still ongoing at center and right guard.

Oluwatimi's injury has allowed Jalen Sundell to get a lot of work with the starting offense, including in Thursday's game, but Oluwatimi is very much still in the mix once he's back, Macdonald said. As for right guard, Anthony Bradford got the start on Thursday, but that competition is still ongoing as well.

"Still a competition," Macdonald said about right guard.

Asked if he wants to see another preseason game before making a decision on those two spots, Macdonald answered in the affirmative.

As for Sundell, Macdonald said of the second-year lineman: "He's having a lot of great plays, and there's play that I think he'd be the first to tell you he could improve on. But all the stuff we're seeing, the athleticism, the point of attack stuff is pretty cool. I thought he did a really good job."

4. The tight ends "showed up" in the preseason opener, and did so again on Saturday.

As mentioned above, Arroyo had a couple of nice catches from Lock, including a great one-handed grab in traffic. AJ Barner also had a few nice plays Saturday, and those two have been standouts throughout camp. While Barner was held out of the preseason opener, Macdonald liked what he saw from Arroyo and veteran Eric Saubert.

"I thought they showed up," Macdonald said. "They were physical, they finished plays. The really exciting thing was you felt them on special teams, the physicality. I think we've got a great room, (tight end coach) Mack (Brown) is doing a tremendous job with those guys. They're kind of like the silent engine of what we're doing on offense. We ask a lot of those guys, and I think they're playing really good football for us."

5. Shaq is back.

Veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin signed with Seattle earlier this summer, but so far has not been on the field during camp while tending to what Macdonald described as a personal matter. Griffin rejoined the team last week, and on Saturday was back on the practice field, even sneaking in a few more reps than planned.

"He snuck in extra reps that weren't necessarily part of the plan, but it was great to see," Macdonald said. "He looks good out there."

The Seahawks returned to the practice field on Saturday, August 9, 2025 and were joined by Legend Marshawn Lynch.
