Coby Bryant Carrying 'Underdog' Mentality Into Year 4

After his breakout season, Coby Bryant still has a chip on his shoulder heading into this season.

From backup to starter and from corner to nickel to safety Coby Bryant, who's in his fourth season in the NFL, has seen a lot of change in the right direction for himself since being drafted by the Seahawks in 2022.

Bryant entered the league as an outside cornerback and during camp his rookie year transitioned to nickel and started six games that season, appearing in all 17. The following season he began the transition to safety, but missed time that year with a toe injury and he appeared in just nine games. Then in 2024, Bryant had his breakout season, taking over the starting safety role and racking up 67 tackles, six passes defensed and three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown.

The stability, going into the season knowing exactly what the plans are for him takes away some stress.

"[I'm] at ease now knowing that I'm playing safety," Bryant said. "Last year coming in, I was playing nickel, safety, and that could be a little frustrating, just not knowing your role, but now that I know my role I'm definitely at ease."

Teammate Julian Love who also made the transition from safety to defensive back and then back to safety, all while he was with the New York Giants, gave some insight on what that's like for a player.

"Two years ago…[Coby Bryant] was pseudo transitioning," Love said. "Obviously, I was the third safety at the time, so he was even getting some reps at safety. And the biggest difference for corner to safety is the spatial awareness. Obviously, you're a little deeper, it's just a different kind of focus, center of the field type of mindset. And so I saw him take a jump from learning that to last year and got to a point last year where I was just vouching for him to get on the field regardless of if he's detailed in the technique of playing safety, he's a ball player. I think we got to put ball players on the field and so now he's detailed in his work and all that stuff, but that core of who he is I think got him to the spot. And so I know he'll be successful because the ball's around Coby's going to be around it. So I can't speak high enough about him because that's my guy."

The switch from cornerback to safety for Bryant is one that just clicked and made sense.

"When I got my first start there, that's when I knew who I am and the position that fits me best."

Bryant got his first start in Week 7 of 2024 and thinking back on what he was able to accomplish last year, Bryant said, "I liked everything. Obviously, there's room for improvement in every aspect, but I have to keep going. Last year was just me scratching the surface, I've got more to showcase and it's exciting to see."

With knowing he has so much more to show for himself, Bryant credits his "underdog" mentality.

"That's just who I am. Always being an underdog, it's just how I was brought up to play, give it your all. That's who I am."

And his teammate Love can vouch for him.

"Coby's just a dude that has a chip on his shoulder. I think I've said this before, but kind of like Michael Jordan making everything personal, that documentary? That's Coby every day. If you slight him, if you talk about him a certain way, that's fuel to his fire and that's what gets him going. And so Coby, I mean similar path to me, played multiple positions kind of past a bunch of years and he settled in to be kind of a rock for us and it's exciting to see him just be a leader and definitely a play maker. I think when Coby's on the field, he's going to be around the ball. That's just been the nature of his game the past six, seven years. Even dating back to college."

The Seahawks held their second padded practice of training camp on Thursday, July 29, 2025 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
