The Seahawks went 9-8 in 2022 and reached the playoffs, but there were some issues with inconsistency on defense, which is why Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider both pointed to the defensive front as an area the team needed to improve this offseason. After ranking 28th in yards allowed per game (369.7) and 30th in rushing yards allowed (151.9), Seattle addressed the front-seven in free agency. Last week, the team picked up fifth-year former Denver Broncos defensive end Dre’Mont Jones. Here are five things to know about the Ohio State alum:
A Pass Rusher On The Rise 📈
2022 was a career-year for Jones, as he recorded 47 combined tackles and eight tackles for loss while tying his 2020 high of 6.5 sacks. Denver selected Jones in the third round of the 2019 draft, and the former Buckeye quickly ascended to one of the league's better edge rushers. For three consecutive seasons, Jones has recorded five or more sacks. Jones’ 16 percent pass rush win-rate ranked sixth-best amongst defensive tackles in 2022 per ESPN.
He Can Stuff The Run, Too
Jones is more than just a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks, he provides Seattle much-needed run-support. On a minimum of 200 run snaps, Jones’ 4.5 percent run stuff rate ranks 10th-best of all defensive tackles league-wide.
Another Underdog In The Mix
"I'm definitely a hungry player," said Jones. "I'm here to be a solution, not a problem. All my life I've been an underdog in a way, always kind of counted out in a way. So that's what motivates me, that's what drives me. Every play, every game, I take it very seriously."
A Seattle Target For Years
If the Seahawks had gotten their way last year, Jones might have been in Seattle a year earlier. As general manager John Schneider explained last week on Seattle Sports 710 AM, the Seahawks inquired about Jones last spring when working on the trade that sent Russell Wilson to Denver, but the Broncos did not want to include him in the trade.
"We talked about a bunch of guys, and he was one of them," Schneider said. "They were not willing to part with him."
Basketball Jones
Despite a successful NFL career following a standout career at Ohio State, football wasn't Jones' first sport. In fact, Jones didn't take up football until his junior year at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, focusing first on basketball before later turning is attention to football.
"I was a huge LeBron fan," Jones said on Seattle Sports 710 AM. "I'm a big Cleveland kid, diehard fan of the Cavs."
With the addition of Pass Rush Specialist Brandon “BT” Jordan, the sky's the limit on what Seattle's pass rush can become. Jones' addition adds versatility to a budding front-seven, as he addresses a key need up front.
