The Seahawks had their sixth practice of training camp on Friday, and their second straight in pads, leading to Friday being the most physical and spirited practice of camp so far. Here are five observations from Friday's practice:
1. Devon Witherspoon is a maniac, in the best way possible.
It's no secret that Devon Witherspoon, who has been selected to three Pro Bowls in as many seasons in the NFL, is one of the Seahawks' best players, and one of the best defensive backs in the NFL. But what might be most impressive in his fourth training camp is the non-stop energy and passion he is bringing to practice when, were Witherspoon like a lot of other players, he could be in a different state of mind at this point in camp.
Having played three seasons, Witherspoon is eligible for a contract extension, and in all likelihood that will happen sometime soon, allowing Witherspoon to join fellow 2023 draft picks Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Derick Hall as young core players to sign multi-year extensions. It's not uncommon in today's NFL for players in that situation to show up for camp but then sit out all or portions of practice while they wait for a deal to get done, but that's not Witherspoon's style. Instead, as he has done all of camp, Witherspoon was flying around on Friday making plays and bringing energy, including one two-play stretch in which he joined several players in a pileup at the sideline to stop a running play, followed by a play in which he shot into the backfield for a "tackle" for loss. And when teammate Tyrice Knight forced a fumble while stuffing a run up the middle, Witherspoon was the first player to get to the linebacker to celebrate the big play.
"I'm really impressed by it, honestly," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said a day earlier of Witherspoon's approach to camp. "It's something that you really aren't used to dealing with as a player. To be able to take whatever's going on in that front and compartmentalize that, shows you his maturity and his commitment to the team. And his own personal development, too. How much he loves football, and how he wants to be out here and try to get better. I really respect his approach so far, it has been great."
2. Leonard Williams helps set the tone for the defense.
Defensive tackle Leonard Williams is heading into his 12th season in the NFL, and in addition to now being a Super Bowl champion, he is also a three-time Pro-Bowl selection, and last year was also a second-team All-Pro pick. Earlier this offseason, NFL coaches and executives voted Williams as the league's best interior lineman in an annual ESPN survey that ranks the top 10 players at every position. In other words, Williams doesn't have a ton to prove in a late July training camp practice. Yet there Williams was, a month or so after his 32nd birthday, sprinting down the right sideline, a good 25 or 30 yards down the field, to help contain a running play that had leaked out. Plays like that don't go unnoticed by players and coaches, and they're a reason why Seattle's defense is one of the very best in the league.
"They fly around on every down," rookie running back Jadarian Price said. "You're 30 yards down the field and you got defensive linemen like Leonard Williams chasing you down, so that just goes to show the way guys practice is the reason they were so successful last year. The fact that they could still do it this year makes me a better player, along with the whole team."
3. It was a big day for second-year tight end Elijah Arroyo.
Elijah Arroyo, a second-year player out of Miami, has a chance to step into a bigger role this season, and in Friday's practice, he showed off the athleticism and pass-catching ability that helped make him a second-round pick in last year's draft.
Arroyo's day included several catches, many of which included nice run-after-catch yardage, then he capped his day with a great leaping grab to haul in a contested deep ball on a throw from Jalen Milroe.
4. Cornerback Noah Igbinoghene had an active day.
Noah Igbinoghene, a free-agent signing who is heading into his seventh season, is right in the mix when it comes to the competition to be Seattle's third cornerback after Witherspoon and Josh Jobe, and the veteran defensive back helped his cause with a productive day on Friday. Igbinoghene showed off his versatility and playmaking ability, doing everything from having a couple of pass breakups. to forcing a fumble with a well-placed punch at the end of a play on the sideline, to flying downhill to make a "tackle" for loss on a run play that stretched out wide to his side of the field.
5. It was a physical, run-heavy practice.
With pads going on on Thursday, the level of physicality has increased in practice, and that was even more evident on Friday, especially with a pretty heavy emphasis on the run game throughout much of practice. The Seahawks aren't tackling to the ground in practice, but there was some good hitting going on, which perhaps contributed to the practice being, how shall we phrase this, the most spirited session of camp so far.
