Our Journey Forward, A Seattle Seahawks Journey To The South

On April 29th, ten Seahawks employees and three educators had the opportunity to take part in a powerful journey to the South, led by The Institute for Common Power. This experience was a trip of learning, reflection, and connection to our nation's civil rights history.

Throughout the trip, participants deepened their understanding of our history and built lasting connections. It was a transformative experience that will continue to inspire empathy, awareness, and action moving forward.

The Seahawks hosted their 4th annual Women's Summit, uniting women and male allies for an afternoon of reflection and inspiration under the theme Empower50: Honoring the Past, Igniting the Future, in celebration of the Seahawks' 50th Season.

On February 19, ONYX, the Seahawks Black Employee Resource Group, in partnership with the DEI team, hosted its 2nd annual Black History Month celebration, 50 Years Strong: Celebrating Black Excellence & the Seahawks Legacy, at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. The event brought employees and guests together for light bites, meaningful conversation, and a powerful panel discussion featuring Doug Baldwin, Mo Kelly, Mario Bailey, Paris Brown, and Ron Howard, followed by an audience Q&A, the Ed Goines Black Excellence Award presentation, and a reception honoring community, leadership, and the ongoing impact of Black excellence.

In this episode of Our Journey Forward, we reflect on a cherished daily tradition from the Truth and Purpose Learning Tour: evening circle time, where each person shared what was placed on their heart that day. As we close out the series, this episode mirrors that reflection—focusing on "The People." We look back on the meaningful connections made throughout the journey and honor the many incredible individuals who left a lasting impact on us along the way.

The episode centers on the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama—where everything we've learned builds to this pivotal point. We reflect on the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery marches, a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement that ultimately led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. This episode honors the courage and sacrifice of those who crossed that bridge and the legacy they left behind.

In this episode of Our Journey Forward, we explore "The Walk," a reflection on the powerful shared experiences of walking together through historic sites during our journey. At the Institute for Common Power, It is called Movement Learning—an approach that combines physical movement with immersive learning, allowing us to connect deeply with the places, stories, and emotions tied to the civil rights movement. This episode revisits some of our most memorable stops, where each walk became a journey through space, time, and self.

In this episode of Our Journey Forward, we focus on "The Bus," highlighting one of the first stops on our journey—Anniston, Alabama. We reflect on the powerful history of the Freedom Riders of 1961 and the courage they demonstrated in the fight for civil rights. This episode explores the significance of that moment and how it set the tone for the rest of our journey.

The Seahawks and Vale Group, in partnership with EmpowerHER and SOAR, hosted the 4th annual Women's Summit—an inspiring day dedicated to recognizing and uplifting the incredible women in our organization. Watch the highlights from a day filled with impactful discussions, leadership insights, and a shared commitment to equality.

In 2024, the Seahawks embarked on their second Truth and Purpose tour to the South with Common Power, along with two teachers and Seahawks Legend Michael Bennett. This was their experience.

The Seahawks celebrated Black history month with many events which included a happy hour with the Seahawks at local Black-owned business, Taste of the Caribbean, an employee book club where employees read Lynda Blackmon Lowery's book Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom, a visit with local high schoolers and middle schoolers to the Northwest African American Museum and a panel discussion to honor Black college football pioneer, Eddie Robinson with Seahawks Legends.
