Seahawks Celebrate Black-Owned Businesses: Emerald City Fish & Chips

In the second week of Black History Month, the Seahawks are focusing efforts towards supporting Black-owned businesses, including Emerald City Fish & Chips, a good spot for hearty Southern cuisine like po' boys and crab puppies with a Northwest twist. The owner, Steve Allen, uses his grandmother's recipes and inspiration to build what he hopes will be generational wealth for his entire family.

The Seahawks celebrated Black history month with many events which included a happy hour with the Seahawks at local Black-owned business, Taste of the Caribbean, an employee book club where employees read Lynda Blackmon Lowery's book Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom, a visit with local high schoolers and middle schoolers to the Northwest African American Museum and a panel discussion to honor Black college football pioneer, Eddie Robinson with Seahawks Legends.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor those in the past and present that have made a mark on the NFL. Seahawks legend Mack Strong shares the story of how Ernie Davis became the first Black Heisman winner.

Seahawks Legends and staff, alongside Choose 180 staff, embarked on a weeklong trip to the south for a Black History learning tour confronting our country's history of racism. Led by Sankofa Impact, the group visited numerous southern cities to meet with Civil Rights foot soldiers and activists working in their community.

The Seahawks hosted a "Spend With Pride" panel discussion with Seattle sports teams as part of Pride Month, encouraging the community to support LGBTQ small businesses.

The Seattle Seahawks in conjunction with OL Reign, Seattle Kraken, Seattle Mariners, Seattle Sounders FC, Seattle Storm and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released a gender-inclusive toolkit for leaders who interact with youth athletes across the state. The digital toolkit is available for all youth coaches, K-12 teachers and administrators and parents in Washington State.

Maurice Kelly is responsible for providing club personnel, players and families with programs that foster personal and professional growth while serving as a conduit between players and management. Experiences from his childhood growing up in the south prepared him for the real world.

Mario had a long 12 year football career from playing at the University of Washington, NFL, NFL Europe, CFL, AFL, XFL, but before his football days, he learned an eye-opening lesson that stuck with him forever.

Seahawks Legend Paul Johns grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas. Throughout his life and professional career in the NFL, he takes lessons and memories of his childhood to celebrate the resilience shown throughout Black history.
