Update On Seahawks Safety Nick Emmanwori's Ankle Injury

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald gave an update on rookie safety Nick Emmanwori, who exited Sunday’s game early due to an ankle injury.

Nick Emmanwori's NFL debut got off to an encouraging start when the Seahawks rookie safety tackled All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey in the backfield for a 2-yard loss on one of his first plays in the game.

Unfortunately for Emmanwori, a second-round pick out of South Carolina, teammate Leonard Williams accidentally fell into Emmanwori's leg, resulting in an ankle injury that knocked Emmanwori out of the game.

Emmanwori briefly returned to the game on kick coverage following Seattle's second-quarter touchdown, but went to the locker room after that play and did not return to the game. The good news, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said, is that Emmanwori does not appear to have a more serious high ankle sprain.

"He hurt his ankle, so we'll see moving forward," Macdonald said. "We don't think it's a high ankle, so that's positive. Everything is intact, we think."

The loss of Emmanwori caused the Seahawks to have to adjust a bit on defense, as he was intended to have a significant role to take advantage of his unique traits, and his absence was felt against an opponent that likes to run the ball as much as San Francisco does.

"A guy goes down, you've got to change personnel," Macdonald said. "We played the game lighter than we normally play against them. But I thought 'Spoon (Devon Witherspoon) went in and did a great job at nickel."

No other injuries were reported for the Seahawks during the game or by Macdonald after.
