Maxwell Among NFL's Top Free Agents
Kevin Seifert and Matt Williamson at ESPN.com compiled the Top 20 players set to become NFL free agents next month, and Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell comes in at No. 15 on their list.
Here's ESPN's notes on Maxwell:
One-liner: Drafted one round after Richard Sherman in 2011, Maxwell started 17 games in the past two seasons but might be squeezed given the Seahawks' financial commitments to Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.
Williamson's report: "He's kind of like the receivers in this class who are a high-end No. 2s, in this case a corner. The Seahawks play a ton of Cover 3, and people don't throw to Sherman, so Maxwell sees a lot of attention. He handles it well, but I don't know that you want him to come down and press a No. 1 receiver all game or think he'll find a way to create some kind of Revis Island. He's not that guy, and few are. He moved into the slot in Super Bowl, and that was a spot New England attacked. He'll make too much money in free agency, but he won't disappoint anyone. He'll be an above-average starting corner in any situation."
Stat to note: Of the 34 players who have intercepted at least six passes in the past two seasons, only four did it in fewer than Maxwell's 1,114 snaps.
Appearing on Sports Radio 950 KJR AM's 'Mitch in the Morning' show on Wednesday, general manager John Schneider said the Seahawks would like to have Maxwell back next season.
"We love him," said Schneider. "We drafted him. We helped develop him. He has worked his tail off to get to where he is. He really stepped up these last two years, especially with Brandon [Browner] going out and Walter Thurmond going out with injuries and their suspensions. He stepped in and was an extremely reliable guy for us.
"So where his market goes, I think it should be extremely high. Whether or not we'll be able to keep him, I'm not sure, but we're going to do whatever we can to try to do that. We're going to recruit him and talk to him and try to put together a nice offer for him, but I just can't tell you that it's going to be good enough."
