Seahawks Planning On Sam Darnold Returning To Practice This Week

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said quarterback Sam Darnold is likely to return to practice this week and gave an update on running back Jadarian Price in his Monday press conference.

When the Seahawks return to practice on Wednesday to begin preparation for their Week 3 game against the Commanders, starting quarterback Sam Darnold will likely be on the field in some capacity, head coach Mike Macdonald said.

"Right now the plan is for him to be out there in some capacity, and we'll go from there," Macdonald said. "How much? We'll see from here to Wednesday what that number is, but right now that's the goal."

Darnold left Seattle's season-opening win early in the game due to a glute injury and did not play in his team's Week 2 win over the Cardinals, but the injury turned out to be less significant than initially feared, and Macdonald said after the game that "the timetable has shifted quite drastically, frankly."

A return to practice in some capacity doesn't guarantee that Darnold would play in Week 3, but it would be a positive step in the right direction. In the meantime, the Seahawks have gotten great play out of backup quarterback Drew Lock, who has four touchdowns without a turnover in two games, including a 235-yard, three-touchdown effort on Sunday that gave him a 139.1 passer rating.

On running back Jadarian Price, who exited Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with what at the time was called a chest injury, Macdonald said he had no firm updates beyond it not being a long-term concern.

Macdonald said on his morning radio show on Seattle Sports 710AM that Price's injury was, "some technical term for somewhere up in your shoulder, but it's intact, and nothing serious, it doesn't seem like."

During his Monday afternoon press conference, Macdonald added, "It's something we'll monitor throughout the week, it shouldn't be a long-term thing."

Asked about Nick Emmanwori, who made his debut after missing most of training camp and the preseason following ankle surgery prior to the start of camp, Macdonald said the second-year safety came out of the game feeling "really good" after being limited to nine snaps as part of the plan to ramp him up to his usual bigger role.

"For what we wanted to get out of the game, I think it was probably best-case scenario where we could really ramp into this week," Macdonald said. "He's got confidence in what he's able to do, and he's also got some really good reps stacked behind him, and now he can have clarity going into the week in terms of gameplan and how many reps he can manage."

Macdonald was also asked about running back Zach Charbonnet, who is on the physically unable to perform list, which means he must miss the first four games of the season, but is eligible to return to practice starting this week.

"We want to try to maximize the amount of time he can practice to give us the opportunity for him to be ready to go back," Macdonald said. "I'm not saying that we're going to max all the practices, but that's something we want to be able to consider, how much practice time it's going to take and things like that, so that's something that we're still working through."
