Seahawks Next Gen Stat Of The Week: Looking At Grey Zabel's Impressive Rookie Season

NFL Next Gen Stats show just how impressive Grey Zabel has been to start his rookie campaign.

Seahawks rookie left guard Grey Zabel has been about as close to flawless as can be expected of a rookie offensive lineman, but it was a rare "loss" on Thursday that helps illustrate just how impressive Seattle's first-round pick has been through four games.

During the Seahawks' 23-20 win over the Cardinals, defensive lineman Dante Stills was able to get past Zabel to pressure Sam Darnold. Stills was not credited with a sack or quarterback hit in the game, so it's a play people might not have even noticed in real time, but it was rather noteworthy in a way.

That pressure stands out not because of the play itself, but because, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, it was the first pressure Zabel has allowed all season.

Zabel allowed just that one pressure on 30 pass blocking snaps, making it another strong performance for the rookie out of North Dakota State, but prior to that play, Zabel was the only offensive lineman in the NFL with at least 25 pass-blocking snaps in each of the first three weeks of the season to not allow a pressure.

And it isn't as if Zabel is only thriving as a pass blocker to start his career. According to ESPN's run block win rate metric, Zabel ranked fourth in the league among interior linemen through three weeks with an 80 percent run block win rate.

"He's great," quarterback Sam Darnold said of Zabel last week. "He shows a lot of poise out on the field during game day, just the way that he communicates. I remember in the Pittsburgh game in that loud stadium on third down, me being able to go up to the line and make a certain call and him coming up to me like, 'Hey, I got the call, but some of the guys didn't. Let's try to somehow be able to clear that up and make it a little bit better.' Those are the kind of conversations that help a team grow and become more efficient as a whole. He's been doing a great job of communicating, especially as a rookie. You don't see that much out of rookies, and he is, I'm not going to say wise beyond his years, but Grey is definitely a smart football player and he's just going to continue to get better."
