Seahawks Next Gen Stat Of The Week: Defense Holds Up Against Rams Big Personnel

The Rams have found success using multiple tight ends of late, but the Seahawks were able to reverse that trend.

One of the many interesting storylines coming into Sunday's game was the way the Rams had been finding success using 13 personnel, meaning one back and three tight ends.

That's hardly a traditional offense in today's NFL, but those multi-tight end looks were working well for Sean McVay's offense, with the Rams averaging at least 4.7 yards per play in each of their previous three games using 13 personnel, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

The Rams used 13 personnel on at least 38.0 percent of their offensive plays in the three games leading up to Sunday's game, and relied on that look again quite a bit against Seattle, running 36.0 percent of their plays with three tight ends on the field.

But unlike previous games, the Rams didn't often succeed from in that personnel, averaging just 2.7 yards per play in 13 personnel against Seattle.

And the Seahawks were able to get the job done without drastically altering what they like to do. The Seahawks have relied heavily on their nickel defense under Mike Macdonald, particularly the big nickel package that features safety Nick Emmanwori as the fifth defensive back.

Heading into Week 11, the Seahawks used nickel personnel at a league-high 85.7 percent rate, including a 75.3 rate against offenses deploying multiple tight-end looks, also a league high, per Next Gen Stats.

The Seahawks didn't deviate from that plan against the Rams, with six different defensive backs playing at least 60 percent of their defensive snaps: Emmanwori, Devon Witherspoon, Coby Bryant, Ty Okada, Riq Woolen and Josh Jobe.

Sticking with what they do best, the Seahawks were able to have a great defensive performance, despite a loss, against one of the league's top offenses and quarterbacks, holding the Rams to a season-low 12 first downs and 249 total yards, with only one Rams score coming on a drive that covered more than 25 yards, with two other touchdowns coming on short fields after an interception.

Best shots from the Week 11 division matchup at the Los Angeles Rams.
