The Seahawks came out of Saturday with the win, but they did leave the game with a couple of injuries for key players.
1. Mike Macdonald is "pretty sure" Zach Charbonnet's knee injury in an ACL.
On Monday morning, head coach Mike Macdonald announced that Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet would be out the remainder of the season with a “significant knee injury.”
And during his Monday press conference, he gave a little more clarity on what the injury is.
"Pretty sure it's ACL," he said. "We're figuring out what the extent of the injury is and we'll get all the details on when he's going to get it fixed and all that. But you just feel for feel for the guy, for the person. This guy's just a absolute stud. But he's around and he's in good spirits and we got his back."
Right now, Kenneth Walker III is the only running back on the 53-man roster but Seattle has Velus Jones Jr. and Cam Akers on the practice squad.
"That's part of the reason we brought him here is just to provide great running back depth" Macdonald said of the two backs. "Both are really good players in their own right. And they got a great opportunity in front of them. So you hate it to be under these circumstances, but it is what it is. We got to move forward. So they'll be ready to go."
Another possibility at running back could be second-year running back George Holani who is currently eligible to come off of injured reserve.
"George is an option." Macdonald said. "We'll see how it goes this week."
When asked if Holani is physically up to speed, Macdonald said, "I think we'll just let it play out this week on how everything goes but probably hear from that over the next few days."
As far as other injuries go, Macdonald said they're working through other players being, "banged up."
"So we'll kind of play that day by day."
And Josh Jones ,who was injured in the divisional game, could make a return this week.
"We got to see how it is on Wednesday. If he's good enough to practice, great. If not, we got to move, go to third ... It's kind of where we're at right now."
Macdonald also said Charles Cross who left the game out of, "precaution" with a foot injury would not need to practice in order to play this week.
2. Kenneth Walker III worked on himself during the offseason and now it's, "paying dividends."
During training camp, Kenneth Walker III shared that he was being intentional about the food he was eating and prioritizing sleep in an effort to be healthier this season. He missed six games last season due to injury.
"I definitely feel it in my performance, so I'm going to just keep it up and go into it with the season."
He added, "It's more like a routine. Here, you get more healthy, clean foods at the facility and then my sleeping habits; I (go to) sleep at around 10 to 10:30 (p.m.). These past years, even in college, I used to stay up until 1:00 (a.m.) because I'm just staying up. It's definitely helped a lot, and I feel much better and extra recovery definitely helps a lot when I come back out here and practice again."
Now 18 games later, Walker has played in every matchup and has managed to stay healthy and available all while racking up 1,027 rushing yards during the regular season. And on Saturday, he rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns.
Macdonald said, "I know he was working through his foot at the beginning over the course of the offseason and that was frustrating for him because of the amount of work that he was putting in. And I think hopefully he realizes the dividends that that's paid, that work that he's put in to really get himself in a good spot up to this point, because what I've seen, I've seen a guy that's, he's gotten better throughout the season, so you can't say that about all runners. And so that's a tribute to him and how he's taken care of his body.
3. Seahawks effort has gotten them this far.
All season long Macdonald has credited the effort of the team as the reason the Seahawks have gotten this far. He says the player's mindset to get this far started in the offseason when majority of the team participated in volunteer offseason workouts. And as the name suggests, players have no obligation to participate, but all chose to.
That buy-in translated to the season and the effort they've all decided to give every game.
"I don't think I'd be standing here right now talking to you guys if our team hasn't decided to play with that type of effort. And that's really all three phases. So that's a decision that they've made that they want to play to."
Following games, in team meetings, Macdonald will usually show plays to the team that he would describe as, "shocking effort" and from this past game one of those plays was at the end of a Walker run, the entire offensive line helped push the ball forward for a few extra yards, despite already gaining the first down.
"No, that was awesome," Macdonald said. "Just every yard matters. So guys are fired up to watch that one."
