Seattle's defense is good. And another week into the season, the Seahawks defense has showed again that they are a problem for opposing offenses.
Through seven weeks, Seattle has racked up eight interceptions (tied for fourth in NFL), 23 sacks (tied for third in NFL) and is allowing just 3.3 yards per carry (tied for first in NFL). On Monday, the defense posed a real threat to the Texans in their 27-19 win.
"This has been the best defense I've ever been a part of," Leonard Williams, an 11-year vet, said. "And it's not because of stats or anything like on paper, it's just the type of mindset that we have, and it is just the togetherness, the brotherhood that we have on this defense is really special."
The togetherness the defense is playing with held the Texans offense to just 56 yards on 17 rushing attempts.
Byron Murphy II said, "I don't want to allow anybody to run the ball. We're going to play hard and physical every play. No matter what happens. We all run to the ball. Whoever touches the ball, they get hit. Whoever it is. Working as one. Everybody communicates and stand on the same page."
On Monday, Seattle managed to get to the Texans quarterback, C.J. Stroud, often, finishing with 3.0 sacks and seven quarterback hits. This was a result of players being called up to do what they do best.
"He's pretty smart at what he does," Williams said of head coach Mike Macdonald. "He knows how to put guys in position. Even when we're making plays out there on the field, and we're running off the field and we're congratulating Mike and saying 'great call', because we there are times where he is understanding the game, understanding what the offense is going to do and he is calling plays to set us up for success."
Until the fourth quarter of Monday's game, Seattle was able to keep Houston out of the end zone, notably with a third-and-1 run stuff and then a third-and-1 and fourth-and-1 stop in the fourth quarter, showcasing a mentality of keeping the opponent out of the end zone.
"It starts from the very beginning," Macdonald said. "It's the culture that A.D. [Aden Durde] helps create on defense. It's our veterans. It's how we practice. We take a lot of pride in how we practice. We've intentionally over the last couple weeks put our guys in some really, really difficult situations and have them respond to it. We get used to playing in those situations. Our guys have done a good job. Taken us a while to kind of get used to it. These are the things that we're learning as a program, how we build our guys, build our mentality. It's the players, man. They take a lot of pride in what they do, the standard they want to uphold. They do it. Just keep fighting."
Drake Thomas, who got the start at linebacker alongside Ernest Jones IV said, "I feel like we're just like one. We're a unit. We play together. We feed off each other. We all bring good energy. When one person gets hot, another person feeds off of it and wants to go make a play. I feel like that's why you see so many different people making different plays."
Thomas described Seattle's defense as one with, "no flinch."
"Don't let the last play beat you on the next play," he said. "So just move on to the next play. No flinch. It's just playing the next down how we're capable of playing."
Boye Mafe said, "No matter what happens on offense, special teams, any situation; the defense has a standard to it. We're believing in each other and understanding that when we go out there, it's 12 as one. We're all together, we're all brothers, no matter what the situation."
