The Seahawks open up their 50th season at home on Sunday, hosting the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC West showdown at Lumen Field. To help you get ready for this week's game; we reached out 49ers team reporter Briana Jeannel with three questions about the Seahawks' Week 1 opponent:

The 49ers are coming off a 6-11 season and a fourth-place finish, what are some reasons that Kyle Shanahan and his team are expecting to bounce back in 2025?

Jeannel: The 49ers are counting on a healthier roster and several key additions to fuel a turnaround. Christian McCaffrey, who missed much of last season with an Achilles injury and later a PCL injury, is fully healthy and returned to a full offseason program. His presence alone gives San Francisco's offense a major boost, and the addition of Brian Robinson Jr., who produced nearly 1,000 total yards with the Commanders last season, provides depth and physicality to keep SF's run game balanced. On the other side of the ball, the return of Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator brings a renewed energy. The 49ers front office loaded up on young talent, spending their first five draft picks on defensive players, highlighted by first-round pick Mykel Williams. Pairing those rookies with veterans like Nick Bosa and new acquisition Bryce Huff should reestablish the 49ers as a physical, playmaking defense. With healthier stars, fresh talent, and Saleh's leadership, the 49ers are positioned for a significant turnaround.

Other than the obvious big names, what player or players do you see as being possible X-factors for the 49ers in this one?

Jeannel: Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall could be a major X-factor against Seattle. With Brandon Aiyuk and Demarcus Robinson sidelined to start the season, Pearsall is stepping into a larger role immediately. The 49ers first-round pick from last year was intentional about developing a strong chemistry with his QB, putting in extra work during the offseason with Brock Purdy, which showed up with explosive plays in training camp and preseason. As a versatile route-runner and reliable target, Pearsall is primed to make an immediate impact and give San Francisco's offense another dynamic weapon.

What matchup or matchups are you most looking forward to seeing play out in Sunday's game?

Jeannel: The battle in the trenches between the 49ers revamped defensive line and Seattle's offensive line will be pivotal. San Francisco will debut first-round pick Mykel Williams alongside Nick Bosa, Jordan Elliott, and Kalia Davis, with Robert Saleh back to oversee the group. The unit's ability to limit running back Kenneth Walker III and disrupt the former 49ers QB Sam Darnold will be crucial to setting the tone defensively. Seattle's offensive line, which also features a first rounder in Grey Zabel, brings plenty of upside and will make this matchup a real test. Watching how San Francisco's new-look front stacks up against a promising Seahawks O-line makes this trench battle one of the key storylines of the game.

The Seahawks and 49ers face off at Lumen Field for Week 1 on Sunday, September 7, 2025. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. PT. Take a look back through history at the Seahawks' matchups against the 49ers.
