Recognizing the Coaches Who Help Shape Tomorrow
Each week during the high school football season, the Seahawks and the Washington State Football Coaches Association select two high school football coaches as our Coach of the Week winners. Each recipient receives a $500 donation to the school's football program and will be honored at a Seahawks Home Game with their fellow recipients. Read more about this year's winners below. Ready? Coach of the Year
At the end of the year, all 20 coaches will come to a Seahawks home game, where they will be recognized with a pregame brunch. One coach will be named Coach of the Year, and they will receive an additional $2,000 towards their football program.
2025 Winners

Week 5: Head Coach Nick Lucey - Squalicum High School (2A)
Nick Lucey has been the head football coach for Squalicum High School for 12 years and is in his 24th year of coaching overall. He holds a 80-34 record while coaching at Squalicum with 6 state playoff appearances, and 2 academic state champions. Coach Lucey is a proud Washington State University graduate and played for and coached under his father Bob Lucey at Curtis High School. Coach Lucey thanks his wife and 3 kids for their support as they are his pride and joy. The Squalicum Storm just beat the reigning state champs and #1 ranked 2A team in a huge 24-21 upset!

Week 5: Head Coach Kevin Peterson - Heritage high School (3A)
Coach Kevin Peterson, is in his third season as Head Football Coach of the Heritage Timberwolves and returned to the sidelines after a 10-year hiatus from coaching to support his daughters during their high school sports and activities. Since his return, he and his staff have led one of the most impressive program turnarounds in recent years. A graduate of South Kitsap High School, Peterson played for Washington State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame Coach Ed Fisher before continuing his career at Eastern Washington University, where he developed his foundation in leadership and player development under Dick Zornes, Mike Kramer, and Paul Wulff. Taking over a program that had finished 0–9 in 2022, Peterson and his staff have guided Heritage through a complete transformation built on accountability, toughness, and Pack Mentality. Tremendous player buy-in and commitment have driven the resurgence, culminating in a gritty Week 5 14–6 victory over Shelton to improve to 5–0, securing the best start and only the 4th winning season in school history. Peterson credits the success to his players' dedication, a supportive administration, a devoted coaching staff, and the support of his wife Marian and family.

Week 4: Head Coach Cody Baskett of Orting High School (2A)
Coach Baskett enters his second year as the head coach of the Orting Cardinals but has been coaching with the program for 12 years. Coach Baskett grew up in Orting, attending the high school, so it is very full circle and an honor to be back at his alma mater. He began his coaching career under his former coach and inspiration Marty Parkhurst. It is a family affair for coach Baskett as he had this to say "It is such a special experience to be able to coach at the stadiums and fields I grew up playing on, and in the community I grew up in. I married my high school sweetheart, who also grew up in Orting, coached her brothers, and have the biggest support system in our families cheering on the Cardinals from the stands just as they've done since I was playing. Our program takes pride in coaching boys to be men filled with integrity and respect and it's an honor to lead these Cardinals alongside an incredibly hardworking coaching staff." The Cardinals just beat a very good Franklin Pierce team 43-42 in a thriller to start the season 4-0.

Week 4: Head Coach Terry Cloer of Mt. Spokane High School (3A)
Coach Cloer has been at Mt. Spokane since 2007, first serving as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach in 2014. During his tenure, he has compiled an impressive record of 86–34, including winning the GSL title in 2022 with an undefeated league record. His teams have reached the playoffs every year, advancing to the state playoffs seven times, including three quarterfinal appearances and one semifinal run. Off the field, his program has excelled as well—leading numerous service and leadership projects while maintaining a team GPA of 3.23 over the past 12 years.
Most recently Mt. Spokane beat their rival Mead 16-14 on a 4th down catch with 18 seconds left in the game!

Week 3: Head Coach Clark Pauls – Wellpinit High School (1B)
Clark Pauls is a proud graduate of Whitworth colllege in 2007 and has been coaching football at Wellpinit for 17 years including making it to state in back to back years as recent as 2022-23. Coach Pauls is also the district athletic director for Wellpinit and a clear community leader. Wellpinit is off to a great start this season with a 2-0 start including a thriller of a win last week vs a 2B Bridgeport team 68-62. Wellpinit is averaging 65 points per game this season and look to continue their success under coach Pauls direction.

Week 3: Head Coach Eric Berg - East Valley (Yakima) High School (2A)
Eric Berg is in his 10th season as the head coach of East Valley (Yakima) and his 23rd season overall coaching high school football. East Valley is off to an incredble 3-0 start outscoring opponents 114-16 adding a big upset win over Prosser 13-7. "Big shoutout to coach Berg, we're proud of you, Coach!" via the East Valley School District page. Safe to say the East Valley community is all behind this football program and coach Bergs leadership!

Week 2: Head Coach Keith Terry - Mount Tahoma High School (3A)
Head Coach Keith Terry has Mount Tahoma off to a great start this season including a dominate upset on the road vs Camas 49-22. Coach Terry graduated from Mount Tahoma in 2006 and has been coaching for over 15 years including becoming the Mount Tahoma head coach in 2022. Coach Terry just married his best friend this year, Amber, who is very supportive of the program! Since taking over the Mount Tahoma has advanced to the state quarter finals back to back years for the first time in over 40 years. "It has truly been a honor and privilege to lead the young man in the community where I grow up. We want to create an environment where we teach these young men to be uncommon in their approach to life. Being uncommon for us is doing the right thing all the time and finding ways to stay focused in the mist of adversity." Said Coach Terry

Week 2: Head Coach Monte Kohler - O'Dea High School (3A)
Head Coach Monte Kohler is a house hold name in the state of Washington when it comes to leading young men and coaching high school football. Coach Kohler has been coaching since 1985 at O'Dea High School and has won 5 state championships including winning it all for 3A last season. Monte was inducted into O'Dea High School's Hall of Fame in 1992, Wall of Honor in 2000, the Washington State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame in 2014. Most recently Monte passed an all time record becoming the winningest coach in Washington State high school football history with his 395th win! Coach Kohler attributes this remarkable milestone to the process and all the coaches and players that have made it all possible over the decades. Monte loves football, but enjoys spending time with his family even more. We thank Coach Kohler for all he has done for the football community and more in the State of Washington.

Week #1: Head Coach Dave Hajek - Washougal (2A)
Coach Dave Hajek has been a football and track & field coach impacting student-athletes lives for more than 3 decades including 20 years as the head football coach and 30 years as the head track & field coach at Washougal High School. Coach Hajek also graduated from Washougal in 1987 where he then attended and walked on the football team at Eastern Washington University. Washougal, a small but mighty program had a dominate kickoff win for the season against a bigger 3A Mountain View team 56-33.
Coach Hajek had this to say in response to his Coach of the Week honors "I am honored that I would be selected for this award and truly feel blessed that anyone recognizes the hard work that the coaches and the athletes have done here at Washougal High School. I will accept this honor for the Kids and the other coaches I have the pleasure to work with. Thank you for this honor and GO Hawks!"

Week #1: Head Coach Jeff Logan - Graham-Kapowsin (4A)
Jeff Logan has been with the GK program for over 12 years now. He enters his 4th season as the head coach after taking over for legendary head coach Eric Kurle. GK kicked off the year with an incredible 40-38 thriller of a win against reigning 3A state champions O'Dea. Coach Logan grew up in Graham and played for GK, he then went on to play at Montana Western in college where his love of the game continued. He has an amazing wife Abby who is very supportive of the program and has his dad and brother on the coaching staff as well, so it is safe to say they are a football family!
"Beating Odea was a huge steppingstone for our young athletes in their maturation process. They were forced into a situation that made them grow up as young men, I am extremely proud of their resiliency and toughness. Our team motto is E.A.T. and I thought out effort, attitude and toughness were on full display last Friday night. Our offense tallied 375 total yards and scored 40 points while our defense was tasked with stopping a physical football team that runs the ball well. They created two turnovers when it mattered most to help propel us to a victory." Said coach Logan!
