COLLEGE: Began his career at the University of Dubuque, an NCAA Division III school. In the 2021 season, as a freshman on defense, Gaines appeared in 10 games, recording 21 tackles, 4.0 sacks, and nine quarterback hurries. The following three seasons at Illinois State (2022-24), Gaines totaled 112 tackles (73 solo), 10.5 sacks and five passes defensed.
PERSONAL: Attended Oak Lawn Community High School. During the 2018–19 season at OLCHS, Gaines participated in three games, recording 10 solo tackles and three tackles for loss. Majored in communication & media studies.
