During his playing career, Chryst played quarterback for four seasons at Stanford, going 11-2 as a starter for the Cardinal before transferring to the University of Tennessee for his fifth year in 2018. Chryst was voted captain by his teammates at Stanford after recovering from a torn ACL at the end of his junior season. He was also named a captain at Tennessee, receiving the team's "My All" award during his time with the Volunteers.
A two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, Chryst graduated from Stanford in 2018 with a B.A. in Science, Technology, and Society. Chryst is a native of Palo Alto, California, where he was a four-star recruit out of Palo Alto High School for the class of 2014.
