Standing on a stage at Levi's Stadium, holding the Lombardi Trophy, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald was asked about the performance of his team and his defense in Seattle's super Bowl LX victory over the Patriots.
"That's going to go down in the history books," Macdonald said after leading the Seahawks to their second Super Bowl title, making him the third youngest head coach to reach the pinnacle of his sport.
Less than a month later, Macdonald joined the Rich Eisen show from the NFL scouting combine, and Eisen asked if Macdonald was yet able to fully appreciate what his team had accomplished.
First, Macdonald acknowledged that he probably hasn't yet fully processed his team's Super-Bowl winning season, but then, after making it clear that he was talking about his players' accomplishment and not his own, Macdonald added, "The 2025-2026 Seattle Seahawks I think deserve to be recognized as one of the all-time great teams, great performances. Find me a stat and compare it to everybody else—that's important in the history books, and our guys deserve that recognition."
All-time great teams are often defined, at least in part, by what the core of that team accomplished over multiple seasons, or by how many players go on to Hall of Fame-caliber careers, so it can be hard to fully appreciate the greatness of a team immediately after a title is secured, but to Macdonald's point, a case can be made for the 2025 Seahawks to go down among the elite championship-winning teams in the league's history.
Next week brings the start of the new league year, and all 32 NFL teams are focused on building for the 2026 season and beyond, but that doesn't mean we can't still reflect on the Super Bowl-winning season that was and appreciate just how special that Seahawks squad was over the course of 20 games, culminating in a 29-13 win over the Patriots.
Without the benefit of a time machine, there's no way to definitively rank champions from different eras or even different seasons, so unless anyone out there has DeLorean going 88 miles per hour with a flux capacitor and room for an entire NFL team, not to mention 1.21 gigawatts of electricity, this is all a fun, hypothetical debate with no right or wrong answers. But if there's ever time for fun hypotheticals, it's during the offseason before free agency and the draft start demanding everyone's attention. So with that in mind, here are some reasons why the 2025 Seahawks, as Macdonald put it, "deserve to be recognized as one of the all-time great teams."
- First, the obvious, the Seahawks won Super Bowl LX, and did it in dominant fashion. A 29-13 final score might not look like a blowout on paper, but thanks to a suffocating defensive performance—through three quarters, Patriots had no points, five first downs, eight punts, a turnover and just 78 total yards—the Seahawks were in control the entire game.
- There's also the path the Seahawks took to get to the Super Bowl. Despite a great regular season, the Seahawks never had the luxury of taking their foot off the gas thanks to a division that produced two other 12-win teams, the Rams and the 49ers. Starting in Week 16, the Seahawks played the Rams in a huge game with playoff implications, a road game against the eventual NFC South champion Panthers, a regular-season finale against the 49ers with the division title and the No. 1 seed on the line, a divisional round game against those same 49ers, who had 13 wins, postseason included, an NFC West championship showdown with the Rams, and a Super Bowl showdown with the Patriots, who went 14-3 in the regular season, scoring the second most points in the league while ranking third in total yards. The Seahawks, of course, won all six of those games, four of them by double-digit margins, part of a 10-game winning streak to close out the season.
- By going through the 49ers, Rams and Patriots in the postseason, the Seahawks became the first No. 1 seed to beat three teams with 12 or more regular-season wins in the postseason.
- The Seahawks posted their most wins (14), road wins (8) and scored the most points (483) in franchise history.
- The Seahawks were a complete team, allowing the fewest points in the NFL (17.2), scoring the third most (28.4), and were also one of the league's best on special teams.
- Seattle's plus-191 point differential in the regular season led the NFL and was the best in franchise history, and including the playoffs, their plus 246 differential was the best by a Super Bowl champion since the 1999 St. Louis Rams.
- The Seahawks closed the season on a 10-game winning streak, winning six of those games by double-digit margins. In four of those wins (Vikings, Falcons, 49ers twice) the Seahawks did not allow a touchdown.
- Seattle's three losses, which came to the 49ers in Week 1, the Buccaneers in Week 5, and the Rams in Week 11, were by a total of nine points.
- The Seahawks were the first Super Bowl champion to play turnover-free football throughout a postseason run.
- For the football nerds (complimentary), the Seahawks were not only the league's No. 1 team in DVOA, which measures team efficiency relative to situation and opponent, they were also the fourth best team since 1978, which is as far back as DVOA has been calculated, trailing only the 1991 Washington football team now known as the Commanders, 1985 Chicago Bears and the 2007 Patriots.
- The Seahawks defense is the eighth best in the DVOA era, finishing three spots ahead of Seattle's 2013 Super Bowl-winning defense.
- The Seahawks were a deep, talented and selfless group, but if star power is your thing, the Seahawks had six players earn Pro-Bowl honors (Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Devon Witherspoon, Leonard Williams, DeMarcus Lawrence and Rashid Shaheed) and a franchise record-tying five earn All-Pro honors (Smith-Njigba, Witherspoon, Williams, Ernest Jones IV and Michael Dickson). Smith-Njigba also earned AP Offensive Player of the Year honors, the second player in team history to win that award.
- The Seahawks won a franchise record eight road games, running their road record to 15-2 in two seasons under Macdonald.
- Then there's the vibes. Most good teams talk about brotherhood or how close they are, but few really live it to the level that the Seahawks did on their way to a title. From offseason workouts to the days leading up to the Super Bowl, the Seahawks were a loose and focused group that had each other's backs, and if you aren't sold on that, just ask linebacker Ernest Jones IV about his quarterback.
