The Seahawks host the Colts at Lumen Field on Sunday, and with a chance of rain on gameday, Thursday and Friday's practices were held on the outdoor fields rather than in the team's indoor facility.
Macdonald opened his press conference praising the team's fields crew for having the field in such great shape after the heavy rain that hit the region this week.
"Before we get started, I just want to give our grounds crew a massive shout out," Macdonald said. "It was raining a good bit earlier in the week, and were able to practice on Thursday and Friday on a great field. Guys weren't slipping, and it was in great shape, so that was awesome. So thank you to those guys."
Injury Updates
The Seahawks will be without tight end Elijah Arroyo, who injured his knee last weekend, but are otherwise healthy heading into Sunday's game.
The Seahawks do have some roster decisions to make this weekend with several players back to practice who have not yet been activated to the roster. Center Jalen Sundell and tight end Eric Saubert, who have been on injured reserve, both returned to practice this week, while rookie defensive end Rylie Mills, who has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of training camp, just wrapped up his third week of practice. All three players are listed as questionable for Sunday's game, but Macdonald wasn't saying which of those players will be activated.
On Sundell, who has missed four games with a knee injury, Macdonald said, "He did good. He had a good week. He did a good job, he's looking good."
Asked if Sundell will start at center if he is back this week, Macdonald said, "We're going to work through the roster moves over the next couple of days. Kind of like (the Colts at quarterback), there will be a center out there on Sunday, I promise."
Macdonald gave a similar answer on Saubert, who has been out five games with a calf injury, saying, "Eric's also looking good. Doing a great job. Since he's made a turn here the last couple of weeks, he's really accelerated through, so Sauby's done a great job."
If Saubert is activated ahead of Sunday's game, that would give the Seahawks added tight end depth with Arroyo out.
On Mills, Macdonald said, "We practiced in pads the beginning of Wednesday, partially because he needed the experience, and he did well. He's looking good."
Receiver Dareke Young, who returned to practice last week, practiced fully this week but has been ruled out.
"He's doing a great job," Macdonald said of Young. "If and when he's activated, he'll be ready to go. He's doing a great job in practice."
Macdonald also gave an update on rookie receiver Tory Horton, who is on injured reserve with a shin injury and is eligible to return next week.
"It's still a process right now," Macdonald said. "We've got some tests going on—not as we speak, but in the last day or two—and that will be indicative of how fast we can accelerate everything."
Shaquill Griffin & Cam Akers clear waivers, and 'hopefully they'll be back soon.'
Potentially needing roster spots to activate some combination of Sundell, Saubert and Mills, the Seahawks waived cornerback Shaquill Griffin and running back Cam Akers on Thursday. Both cleared waivers and Macdonald indicated both could be back with the team soon, presumably on the practice squad.
"It's really just roster management," Macdonald said of the moves. "It's one of those things that's kind of a necessary evil that we have to do. To my knowledge they cleared waivers, so hopefully they'll be back soon."
The Seahawks continue to prepare for multiple Colts quarterback options.
After the Colts brought 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers out of retirement this week, speculation has continued to grow that the former eight-time Pro-Bowler will start on Sunday. Colts coach Shane Steichen would not say Friday whether they'll go with Rivers or rookie Riley Leonard, and Macdonald said the Seahawks are preparing for both.
"We'll see," Macdonald said. "He's either going to play or he's not. Riley's going to play or he's not. At some point, they're going to put a quarterback out there, and we've got to go play ball. We're getting ready for both of them."
