The Seahawks waived a pair of veteran players on Thursday, cornerback Shaquill Griffin and running back Cam Akers.

No corresponding moves were made, meaning the team currently has two open spots on the 53-man roster, but they have multiple players who have returned to practice recently who could be candidates to fill those spots if the Seahawks were to activate them ahead of Sunday's game against the Colts.

Center Jalen Sundell and tight end Eric Saubert both returned to practice from injured reserve this week, and Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald expressed optimism that both could be ready to go by Sunday.

"We hope so, we hope they're available," Macdonald said prior to Wednesday's practice. "These guys are coming off of extended breaks, so we have a plan for each guy. We'll see how it pans out throughout the week, but we're optimistic for this weekend. We'll see how today goes, then we'll kind of accelerate throughout the rest of the week and into next week."

Receiver Dareke young also returned to practice from IR last week after being sidelined with a quadricep injury. Another player who could return at some point is rookie defensive lineman Rylie Mills, who opened the season on the physically unable to perform list due to a torn ACL suffered late in his senior season at Notre Dame. Mills returned to practice two weeks ago but has not yet been activated from the PUP list.

Griffin, who began is career with the Seahawks as a 2017 third-round pick, returned to Seattle this offseason, and has split time between the active roster and practice squad, appearing in two games with one start.

Akers, a sixth-year veteran, signed with the Seahawks to add depth after George Holani suffered a hamstring injury, but has been inactive for each of his two games with Seattle.
