The Seahawks were deliberate in their plan for bringing Nick Emmanwori back following the ankle surgery he had before training camp.
The second-year safety missed the preseason and almost all of camp, then did not play in Seattle's season-opening win. A week later, Emmanwori was active, but limited to just nine snaps. Then last week, the former second-round pick played 36 of Seattle's 72 defensive snaps. In Sunday's win over the Chargers, however, Emmanwori was back to being basically an every-down player in Seattle's defense, and the result was one of the most productive games of his young career.
Emmanwori had nine tackles, including two tackles for loss, one sack, two quarterback hits, and one pass defensed.
"Very impactful," defensive tackle Bryron Murphy II said of Emmanwori's game. "When Emman is out there on the field with us, he makes a difference. He's such a playmaker. He's always around the ball, flying around. He can cover tight ends, he can pass rush, he can do it all. You can't miss him."
As Murphy notes, Emmanwori was involved in a number of ways, whether it was playing near the line of scrimmage in a linebacker-type role, or putting a hand in the ground to rush off the edge, or blitz from the second level, or drop into coverage. Emmanwori's day included everything from lining up across from Pro-Bowl tackle Joe Alt and recording a pressure that forced an incomplete pass, to recognizing a trick play and dropping into coverage to cover quarterback Justin Herbert, snuffing out the potential big play. And according to NFL Next Gen Stats, Emmanwori had a career-high five run tackles, second only to Ernest Jones IV, while also having a career-high four pressures. In all, seven of Emmanwori's nine tackles were within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage.
"Nick played great," outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu said. "He's battling what he's battling and he's back out there making huge plays for us, got a nice sack for us, made some good plays in the pass game. Nick's just evolving, continuing to get better with what we saw his rookie year, and you best believe he's going to keep getting better."
Emmanwori's big statistical day could have been even better if not for a couple of costly penalties, one of which was entirely avoidable, an after-the-whistle 15-yarder at the end of the first half that put the Chargers into field goal range. He was also flagged for a facemask on what would have been a third-down stop on an eventual Chargers touchdown drive in the third quarter, giving him two of Seattle's seven 15-yard penalties.
The penalties likely contributed to Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald being not very willing to hand out praise across the board after the game -- the Seahawks had 14 penalties for 150 yards, including four 15-yarders on the Chargers' two touchdown drives -- and when asked about Emmanwori's play Macdonald offered only, "It was good to have him back, but everybody has to get better."
But a couple of costly penalties notwithstanding, it was hard not to notice No. 3 making plays all over the field. And though Emmanwori had to be patient to get back to this type of role, looking back he can appreciate the approach the team had with him in recent weeks.
"One-of-a-kind organization," he said. "Other teams might just throw me back out there, especially with my talent. I really appreciate them being smart and ramping me up from game to game and being considerate to me. It allowed me to get up to full speed and flourish. They're a one-of-a-kind organization, and I love them. They're my guys."
