GLENDALE—Heading into Thursday's matchup, the Arizona Cardinal's run defense was ranking in the top half of the league. Arizona was ranked fourth in run defense, allowing just 76.3 rushing yards per game and were ranked 10th in yards per carry (3.8).
While the run game for Seattle was hot and cold on Thursday, the Seahawks were able to put those numbers to shame, rushing for 155 yards and averaging 4.4 yards per carry. These are the Seahawks' best rushing and yards per carry stats in a game this season.
Kenneth Walker III ran for 81 yards, Zach Charbonnet for 39 yards and one touchdown and Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba both showed off their running skills rushing for 24 and 11 yards, respectively.
The best play made by a running back in Seattle's win was Charbonnet's touchdown run, where with some help from left tackle Charles Cross, Charbonnet was able to find the end zone.
"I should have given Charles a game ball. That's one of my favorite plays I've ever seen. (I'm) just so proud of him, man. This guy has gone through a lot this year with some personal things. He's such a great person. He is a great leader. He's a great football player. We could be in a walkthrough and this guy is just (going) a thousand percent – attention to detail, takes the liner. (He) does all the things you ask for. He sets such a great example for our team doing those things. It's probably my favorite play of the year so he'll be rewarded this week, I promise."
On the play, Charbonnet said, "That's just the way we play too. I'm going to do my job, keep my legs churning, but I know that my boys are coming behind and continuing to help and push me in."
For the run game to be effective though it's about more than just the running back. It's the offensive line, the tight ends and also receivers picking up blocks.
"Just have to give credit to the line up front, tight ends, receivers blocking around the perimeter," Charbonnet said. "All those guys doing their job, that's what's able to make it go. Then as running backs, just being patient and hitting the hole hard."
Cross said, "We ran the ball pretty well today. Just execute on a short week. Just being able to be locked in and execute. I feel like we did a great job of doing that."
