Seahawks Nex Gen Stat Of The Week: Defense Brings The Pressure

The Seahawks defensive front was outstanding in Sunday’s win over Jaguars, keeping quarterback Trevor Lawrence under pressure throughout the game.

The Seahawks came into Sunday's game in Jacksonville looking to not only get back on track after a Week 5 loss to Tampa Bay, and for that to happen, Seattle's defense knew it had to step up after a subpar outing against the Buccaneers.

And the Seahawks defense indeed was able to respond in a big way, holding Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars offense to 273 yards and 4.0 yards-per-play average in a 20-12 victory.

Leading the charge for Seattle's defense was a defensive front that dominated throughout, both in the pass rush and run defense.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Seahawks pressured Lawrence on 25 of his 50 dropbacks, the highest pressure rate he has faced this season.

The Seahawks were able to sack Lawrence seven times, more than his total number of sacks through five games (6), and they recorded 17 quarterback hits. Per Next Gen Stats, Uchenna Nwosu, who had 1.5 sacks, led the team with nine pressures, and he was one of five defenders to finish with four or more pressures along with DeMarcus Lawrence (seven pressures, 2.0 sacks), Byron Murphy II (seven pressures, 2.0 sacks), Boye Mafe (six pressures) and Leonard Williams (four pressures, 0.5 sacks).

Making that performance all the most significant is that defensive front was able to come through with such a big performance when the Seahawks were down three starters in the secondary, with safety Julian Love and cornerbacks Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen all sidelined by injury. The players filling in provided strong enough coverage to give pass rushers time to get home, but players on that defensive front also took it upon themselves to step up when the back end of their defense was missing some key players.

"We feel like we're a Top 3 best front in the league," DeMarcus Lawrence said. "When our team is down and they need help, we're the ones who need to come through for the whole team. So we do put it on our back to make sure we're going out there, setting the tempo, making the plays that need to be made and finishing the game."
