Seahawks 'Know We Can Be Great,' But Need To Clean Things Up To Get There

The Seahawks head into their Week 6 game in Denver knowing they have room to improve to reach their potential after a 3-2 start.

Not long after the Seahawks came up just short in a close loss to the 49ers, head coach Mike Macdonald praised his team for being "a tough, connected, great group," but he also gave a pretty honest assessment of where his team is through five games.

"We got the capacity to be a really good football team, but right now we're not doing the things to become a great team," Macdonald said after Sunday's 32-29 loss that dropped Seattle's record to 3-2.

The Seahawks head to Denver for a Thursday night game against the Broncos knowing that they have the potential to be among the NFL's elite teams, just like they were last year on their way to a Super Bowl title, but they also know they can't just assume they'll become that type of team without cleaning up some of the issues that have stood in their way so far.

Thursday games present a lot of challenges, both in terms of being ready, physically, to play a game on such a short turnaround, as well as being able to put together and execute a gameplan. But with what veteran receiver Cooper Kupp described as an "uneasy feeling" coming off Sunday's loss, the Seahawks welcome the short turnaround.

"I think there's that uneasy feeling in the facility right now coming off a loss that we think we should have won and just didn't do well, especially offensively," Kupp said. "There's a frustration there, but also chomping at the opportunity to go out there and play another football game here in a few days. There's excitement there. Looking forward to getting after things."

On a similar note, safety Julian Love said, "We're hungry. There's a lot to correct, there's a lot to improve. Everyone on that field has a play or two that they're like, 'I wish I had that one back.' That's never great. It's never great when it's everyone. Can't say it's one person. All of us are looking inward and correcting and just sharpen up that one play. We're a good team, we know we can be a great team. It's going to take those one-offs to go away."

While the more pessimistic outlook to the start of Seattle's season would point out that they're already two games behind the 49ers in the standings, or that the offense has not quite hit is stride while battling injuries in the run game and turnovers, another way to look at it is that, despite their issues, the Seahawks very easily could be 5-0 if they can simply take care of the ball a little bit better.

In their two losses this season, which were by a combined five-point margin, the Seahawks committed seven turnovers, leading to 42 points off of turnovers for the Commanders and 49ers, including a defensive touchdown in each game. It's one thing to lose games because you're simply physically overmatched or consistently being out-schemed; that's not what's happening with the Seahawks.

Going back to this time last season, when Seattle also started 3-2, the Seahawks have won 17 of their past 20 games, postseason included. And in those three losses—two this season and a 2025 Week 11 loss to the Rams—the Seahawks committed a total of 11 turnovers, with opponents scoring 56 points off of those turnovers, and lost those three games by a total of seven points.

The Seahawks don't need to be perfect to win games, they just need to avoid multiple costly mistakes like the turnovers, or like the plethora of penalties that almost cost them in a closer-than-it-needed-to-be win over the Chargers.

"You want to continually build and continue to play your best brand of football," Love said. "Right now, we're not playing our best brand of football, straight up and down. You guys see it. But it's out there. It's obtainable. I've been a part of some groups in a previous life that you feel like you played a clean game and you still lose by two scores. It's empowering to know if we're on our stuff, we're on the details, we're playing together, we can make things happen. It's proven in the past. We have to go through that. That's a callus that we have to build this year. It's a new mountain, as we've talked about. Adversity has shown itself, how are we going to respond?"

Said Kupp, "If you want to grab anything positive out of it, it's that most times you turn the ball over that many times, you're not in a position to win the game at the end of it. We battled and found a way to be in that position. There is that as a positive, but it is about getting out of your way and putting the defense in tough positions. We just have to be better there."

The Seahawks have the talent, coaching and track record to be a great team, but they also know they aren't there yet, and need to get things cleaned up soon, preferably starting on Thursday, to become the team they expect to be this season.

"For us, there's a sense of urgency," said quarterback Sam Darnold. "That phrase, 'sense of urgency,' has been thrown around a lot the last couple of days, and it's true. There needs to be a sense of urgency to get better and have ball security. I'm going to continue to be as decisive as I can be and go through my reads and trust what I see, trust my feet, all those things. Can't have turnovers. You have to protect the football in this league. If you don't, you'll pay."
