Seahawks Know They Have Work To Do After Loss To Broncos, But Confident 'We'll Figure It Out'

The Seahawks came up short again in an overtime loss to the Broncos, but are confident they’ll find solutions and turn a corner.

DENVER -- For a while on Thursday evening, it looked like the Seahawks just might have an improbable comeback in them.

After trailing by 11 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Seahawks got a touchdown and two-point conversion to make it a one-score game, then they tied it at the end of regulation to force overtime.

In overtime, however, one of the team's biggest issues this season, turnovers, came up again at the worst time, and the Broncos were able to turn Sam Darnold's second interception into a winning field goal in a 17-14 victory on Thursday night.

So while Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald was proud of this team's ability to battle back, and of the way his team's defense dominated for two-plus quarters, giving up only two first downs the rest of the game after Denver's second touchdown in the second quarter, he also knows his team, which now sits at 3-3, has some work to do if it's going to be the type of team coaches and players believe they can be.

"I told the team, we have conflicting emotions," Macdonald said. "There's no moral victories in the league. It's a bottom-line business, production business. But I am proud of our effort. I am proud of the resolve of the team. I'm proud of our kind of connectivity, the connectedness of our team. However, there's things that we need to get better at quickly. We know those things, they're within our control, and that's what we do; we find solutions, and we get things figured out. We move forward, and we evolve, and the best teams in this league, they do that, and that's what we want to be. We want to be one of the best teams in the league, as we know, and we believe we can be. So that's where our focus is going to be over the next few days, and then we'll be back at it with the players on Monday. We've got some work ahead of us, and we'll figure it out. Got the right people in the building, got the right people to do the job, we've just got to go we got to go to work, so that's where our focus will go."

Six games into the season, the reigning Super Bowl champions are 3-3, having lost three of their last four, all by three or fewer points, and while committing a total of 10 turnovers in those games. There were three turnovers in Thursday's loss, a Rashid Shaheed fumble that ended a drive in Broncos territory, potentially costing the Seahawks points, and two Darnold interceptions late in the game, the second of which led to the game-winning field goal in overtime.

So it was hardly a surprise when Macdonald, asked what is primary concern was, responded, "Why the ball's in jeopardy so much on offense. We just talk about complementary football, all three phases picking each other up. That's who we are. We feel like that's our competitive advantage. We talk about 12 as One, people together, the synergy of the team. Right now, we're not creating that in the run game, quarterback is getting hit too much, so those we'll look at it hard and find solutions and go from there."

The good news for the Seahawks is that, coming off a Thursday game, they have extra time to dig into those issues that have contributed to losses and work to find solutions.

"Oh, they're incredibly valuable," Macdonald said. "Incredibly valuable. So the responsibility, or onus, is on us to go make it come to life. So that's what we intend to do.

"We're going to look at everything. As coaches, you watch the tape and you evaluate the execution. There's numbers involved. There's things that we can gain information that might not be [available] to the naked eye. So we're going to go down all those avenues, and we'll see what comes out of it. I'm probably thinking a lot of the same things you guys are thinking. It's just a matter of backing it up and making sure we're going down the right path and finding the right solutions."

And though the Seahawks are disappointed in the loss and with their start to the season, players weren't down about it after the game. They know there is a lot of season left and that they have what it takes to win a lot of football games.

"There's frustration, there's certainly frustration," said receiver Cooper Kupp. "We've got to find ways to win these close ones. We haven't found the way to do that yet. There's lots of self-inflicted stuff, there's mistakes across the board -- too many to allow us to overcome it at the end of the day. There's more than enough intention, there's more than enough energy being put into these weeks in our preparation. The attitude of guys going out there onto the field is fantastic, guys are bought into what we're building here, but it needs to continue to get better. Guys need to continue to grow, and we've got to chase those razor-thin margins, those razor-thin edges that we talk about all the time. We've got to find ways to find those edges and be able to make plays alive for us."

That frustration Kupp mentions is a team-wide feeling because the Seahawks know they can get better, but it isn't leading to any doubt or division within the team.

"The mentality is like, OK, in these moments we just come closer," said safety Julian Love. "We're going to figure it out, no one is ever going to point fingers around here. You see that with bad teams; we're not that. Everyone is just going to look inward and lock in."

"I love this team. I love our fight," said defensive tackle Leonard Williams. " It's mixed emotions. I felt like we showed that we have each other's backs, we stayed connected, we fight to the end of the game. There were definitely times when things weren't going our way, but we kept staying in it, and we put ourselves in position at the end of the day to win the game, and I feel like we should have. Kudos to them for winning the game, but I feel like we have to finish in those moments.

"The same way we feel about losing this game, it's the same way the season has been going so far. These first six games, we're doing well, we're showing what type of team we are at times, but we're not doing enough to close out these games that we should be… Three losses is definitely not going to take us out of taking a run at a championship, but it's definitely time to really hone in and focus on what's stopping us from winning these games. It's definitely crunch time right now."
