Seattle left Tennessee with a win and a new single-season franchise record holder in receiving yards. On Sunday Jaxon Smith-Njigba marked himself atop a record in the franchise's history books. With 1,313 receiving yards on the season through 11 games played, Smith-Njigba surpassed DK Metcalf who previously held the record with 1,303 receiving yards in 2020. Along with setting the record, his evening included highlights of big catches, a 63-yard touchdown reception and another big catch of 56 yards on a different touchdown drive.
On this drive of the game, Smith-Njigba caught a pass for 56 yards to help set up a 1:41 scoring drive for the Seahawks.
After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, the Seahawks opened the third quarter with a 16-yard kick return by Rashid Shaheed putting Seattle at their own 24-yard line. On the first play of the drive, quarterback Sam Darnold connected with Smith-Njigba down the left sideline for 56 yards. This was one of three deep receptions that combined for 132 yards for Smith-Njigba.
Following the deep pass to Smith-Njigba, Seattle running back Kenneth Walker III had a carry for seven yards to put the Seahawks at Tennessee's 13-yard line. Darnold then found Smith-Njigba in the endzone for 13 yards. This was the second of Smith-Njigba's deep receptions as defined by NFL Next Gen Stats.
On that offensive drive, Seattle moved the ball 76 yards in 1:41 and after the point-after attempt by Jason Myers, the Seahawks were up 23-3.
Although not on this specific drive, Smith-Njigba caught a 63-yard touchdown pass, the longest reception of his career and also set the Seahawks’ single-season receiving record during the game.
Smith-Njigba hauled in eight catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. He also now leads the NFL with 13 deep receptions and 542 deep receiving yards this season.
He received a game ball following the game for his historic afternoon. Following the game, head coach Mike Macdonald said, "Happy for JSN (Jaxon Smith-Njigba). He's doing an incredible job, brings it every day, and he's a great teammate, which is awesome. So you're really happy for him."
