The Seahawks are back on Q13 FOX this Sunday with another Seahawks Classics Presented by Washington's Lottery at 7 p.m. This week, it's a complete re-airing of the 2013 NFC Championship Game, perhaps the most memorable game in franchise history.
While the 49ers have long been division rivals of the Seahawks, things were particularly contentious in 2013. San Francisco had been the top dog in the NFC West after winning back-to-back division titles in 2011 and 2012. But with the Legion of Boom at perhaps the peak of their powers, and a young Russell Wilson with a full season of experience under his belt, the Seahawks had other plans in 2013.
Seattle would take home the NFC West crown after going 13-3 during the regular season, one win better than the 49ers who had finished with a very respectable 12-4 record. There was little doubt that these were two of the best teams the NFC had to offer in 2013, and there was no better stage for them to settle their differences than in the conference championship.
The game will always be remembered (and rightfully so) for Richard Sherman's tip to Malcolm Smith for a championship-sealing interception, but the rest of the evening provided plenty of drama as well. The 49ers jumped out to a 10-0 lead and seemed to be in control for much of the game, which served to only increase the intensity and tension at CenturyLink Field. A long touchdown run from Marshawn Lynch, clutch field goals from Steven Hauschka, and key turnovers forced by the Seattle defense, helped turned the tide. But still, at no point in the game did a Seahawks win feel certain until Sherman's incredible play, coming with just 30 seconds remaining. There's a reason this game was ranked No. 68 on the 'NFL's 100 Greatest' Games list.
Don't miss a complete replay of the 2013 NFC Championship Game this Sunday at 7 p.m. on Q13 FOX.
The final Seahawks Classics of the preseason will air on Sunday, September 6, and we're definitely saving the best for last: Super Bowl XLVIII.
