The Seahawks will be without starting quarterback Sam Darnold when they face the Cardinals on Sunday in Arizona.
That seemed likely when Darnold exited Seattle’s Week 1 win over the Patriots with a glute injury, and head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed it on Wednesday, announcing that Drew Lock will be the starter in Week 2.
The injury, which is not considered serious, will not require a trip to injured reserve, Macdonald said.
"Sam's going to be out this game, Drew will start for us," Macdonald said. "We don't anticipate putting him on IR or anything like that, but we'll just kind of reevaluate every day, reevaluate next week, and we'll go from there, but he won't play this week."
Asked what Darnold is able to do at this point, Macdonald said, "He's killing it on his rehab, he's doing a great job. He's doing a lot right now, he's just not going to be able to play this week."
In addition to Darnold not going on injured reserve, another sign that the injury is not expected to keep him sidelined for long is the fact that the Seahawks are not planning to add another quarterback for depth behind Lock and Jalen Milroe.
"We're going to roll with Drew and Jalen," Macdonald said.
Lock will get starter's reps in practice this week, which will help him be prepared. After seeing Lock help lead the Seahawks to a comeback win last week, Macdonald is expecting more good things from the veteran quarterback on Sunday.
"Drew's a proven, really good player in this league," Macdonald said. "When he has started, he has played really good football, then when he's been on our team, since I've seen him play in person, he's a heck of a player here. Heck of a guy, heck of a teammate. He's got a great balance about him of being a true professional, but also, he's a loose and focused guy, he's a warrior in the garden. All the things we want from our players, he's that at the quarterback position."
Macdonald added that Milroe, who will move into the backup role, will get added reps this week as well to be prepared.
"I'm sure we'll tweak some part of the process in terms of numbers," Macdonald said. "Jalen's not going to get no reps, let's put it that way."
In other injury news, safety Nick Emmanwori and receiver Tory Horton are both practicing this week after being held out of the opener.
"Those guys are doing great," Macdonald said. "They're going to practice today, and we'll go from there."
As for safety Ty Okada, who missed the opener with a hamstring injury, Macdonald said there's at least a chance of Okada returning this week.
"Ty Okada has a chance to play this week," Macdonald said.
