The Seahawks improved to 3-1 with Sunday's 30-23 win over the Chargers, playing well enough to get the job done while also knowing there is a lot of room to get better. That's especially true when it comes to penalties, with the Seahawks setting a franchise record for penalty yardage in a game with 150 on 14 penalties.
More on that topic and other takeaways from Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald's Monday press conference:
1. The Seahawks plan to learn from their penalty issues in Sunday's game.
It's almost impossible to play an NFL game without committing some penalties, Macdonald knows that, and he also is willing to live with certain flags if it's the cost of doing business for a player putting in good effort. One example he gave on his weekly radio show Monday morning was the flag Connor O'Toole got while making a big hit on punt coverage. It was a great effort play and a big hit, but unfortunately the returner lowered his head as O'Toole went in for the hit and the helmet-to-helmet contact drew a flag. Other penalties, however, are less acceptable, and there were plenty of those Sunday as well as the Seahawks piled up 150 yards on 14 penalties, including four 15-yarders on the Chargers' two touchdown drives.
"We want to play great football all the time, no matter the circumstances. I don't like to phrase it like, 'Hey, we're in our own way,'" Macdonald said. "Chasing edges means something around here. We want to play a certain way. We want to bring it up to the line, and then we don't want to cross the line. There were some plays yesterday where we went over the line, and we're going to learn from it, we're going to move forward. The guys were great today. In order to play our style of defense and play physically and have waves to the football and be able to take aggressive angles to the ball and taking shots on the ball, things like that, you've got to live that life. Sometimes you go over the line a little bit, and we'll learn from it and keep rolling."
2. Seattle saw an "effective" run game on Sunday.
The Seahawks finished Sunday's game with 138 total rushing yards, which was a significant improvement from the 44 rushing yards in Week 3. Without rookie Jadarian Price, who was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, Emanuel Wilson led the way for Seattle's run game. He finished the game with 81 yards on the ground, including an 8-yard touchdown run and he also contributed to the pass game with 39 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Rashid Shaheed, George Holani and a quarterback run from Sam Darnold added 57 more yards on the ground.
"Thought the run game was effective," Macdonald said. "I think we ran (for) like 4.4 a carry for 100 and whatever yards. (Thomas) Hammock told me today, 'It doesn't matter.' How many yards did we run for?' He goes, 'Doesn't matter.' Love it. There are spots we could be more effective for sure. Room for improvement, like with the rest of the team. Given JD's (Jadarian Price) situation in the middle of the week and Emanuel (Wilson) stepping up and playing, everybody handled it well."
The Seahawks also debuted a new weapon in the run game, with Shaheed getting two carries on Sunday, with one of them being a touchdown run, which was his first offensive touchdown as a Seahawk.
"We've had that in all (training) camp," Macdonald said. "This isn't a quote from (Brian) Fleury but felt like it was appropriate because of JD (Jadarian Price) going down, he gave us some speed. That was cool."
3. Byron Murphy II is playing good football and deserves a shoutout.
Third-year defensive tackle Byron Murphy II entered this season knowing that he wanted to see a better and improved version of himself, showing that he belongs in the NFL.
"Byron's playing some great football on run and pass," Macdonald said. "He'd be the first to tell you that there's some things that he can get better at, but he's really playing great football right now."
On Sunday, he finished the game with his first sack of the season, beating the offensive lineman in a one-on-one situation to get to Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
"He won his one-on-one when they turned to Leo (Leonard Williams)," Macdonald added. "When he gets double teamed, he pushes the pocket and sets up success for the next guy. What else do you want? He's just a great player that does a lot of things go unnoticed, so I'm glad you're asking about him because he deserves the shoutouts."
4. Nick Emmanwori "did a lot of great things" in his best performance of the season.
Second-year safety Nick Emmanwori was unfortunately part of the penalty problem, drawing a pair of 15-yarders, the first of which was an after-the-whistle penalty that put the Chargers in field goal range at the end of the first half. But while Macdonald was not thrilled by that particular penalty, there was also a lot to like about Emmanwori's game, which included nine tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a pass defensed. Emmanwori, who had ankle surgery before camp, causing him to miss the preseason, training camp and the season opener, played only nine snaps in Week 2, then saw his workload increase in each of the past two games, including 56 of 71 defensive snaps on Sunday.
"Nick did a lot good things," Macdonald said. "But you've got to remember, he had no training camp, he didn't have a preseason, he's had limited practice snaps. So it's a good example for our team, hey, this is a new team, this is a new year, we've got to go back through the process of how we want to play certain things. But Nick did a lot of great things yesterday, and he's only going to get better. We've got to do a great job as coaches to keep it in his wheelhouse and let him do things that he does really well, but he's holding up his end of the bargain. There's some room for growth, but a lot of good things as well."
5. Receiver blocking keyed two big touchdowns.
If you play receiver for the Seahawks, the expectation is that, in addition to catching passes, you're also willing and able to block in the run game. That was on full display on Sunday, with two different players whose resumes include Offensive Player of Year honors, Cooper Kupp and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, helping spring long touchdowns.
First, on Emanuel Wilson's 23-yard screen pass catch and run, Kupp was downfield to provide the final block as Wilson made his way into the end zone. Later in the game, Kupp helped open a hole for fellow receiver Rashid Shaheed, who took a pitch out of the backfield, then Smith-Njigba cleared out the final defender, shoving safety Tony Jefferson to the ground to make sure Shaheed had a clear path to the end zone.
"Great plays," Macdonald said. "It's how we want to play football. We need to be able to block second and third levels, that's how you get explosive plays, that's how you get runs off the ground. It's how we want to play, to be blunt about it. The guys did a great job yesterday, they really deserve a lot of credit. Coop had a tremendous game, Jax blocked well, Tory (Horton) did some good things. We've got to keep it rolling on that front so we can pop runs."
