Mike Macdonald On New Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Brian Fleury: 'It Felt Like He Was One Of Us'

Head coach Mike Macdonald outlined why Seahawks new offensive coordinator Brian Fleury was the right fit for the job.

A little over two weeks after the Seahawks won Super Bowl LX with Klint Kubiak as the offensive coordinator, Seattle was introducing a new offensive coordinator next to Mike Macdonald at a Thursday press conference.

The Seahawks hired former San Francisco 49ers run game coordinator/tight ends coach Brian Fleury as their next offensive coordinator. After coming off of a Super Bowl championship season, Macdonald's mindset was to keep as much as possible the same.

"The continuity is really important," he said. "I think we were able to do that still with hiring Brian. This is still year three for me. It's all about the process. You just want to be disciplined to that and have respect for all the layers of it and all the steps. I felt like we did that, and it became clear that this was the best decision, the best way to go as we finished it up."

Macdonald added, "The mentality going into the whole process was, 'Hey, let's stick to our process.' We had some really great talented coaches in-house that we that we talked to and all of those guys did a phenomenal job. Brian's someone that that I've known about for a while, and we have some common relationships that we share kind of throughout the coaching ranks. So, I knew about Brian. I knew he was a great coach. And then we had an opportunity to talk to him and he just did a phenomenal job. I think his vision for and what he believes in offensively and with a football team was aligned with how we wanted [it] to and [he] just hit the principles and philosophy and how he goes about his business and how he coaches and what he wants from our offense. He took it straight out of our culture graphic. So, a lot of alignment, it gave us an opportunity to have some great continuity and keep some great coaches as well and let us take our offense at the next level. So I'm really excited about it."

Fleury among his many stops in the NFL crossed paths with Brian Duker and Ravens defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver both of whom Macdonald has a relationship with.

"Brian Duker's a mutual friend," Macdonald said. "Anthony Weaver, we worked together. Those were guys that have been singing his praises for a while, all the way back to Baltimore."

Aside from his connections, Fleury brings over a decade of diverse NFL experience.

"He has great command," Macdonald said. "He has great communication skills. There's a clarity in how he sees the game and what he expects. I think our players are going to really appreciate that. We talk about clarity a lot, being decisive. I'm very confident that what we're going to be asking our players to do is going to be very clear to them. And based on his relationships with his players in the past, and we have a great resource here in Eric Saubert about how he treats his players and how he goes about his business every day. It felt like he was one of us. So I'm really excited for him to lead our offense."

And Fleury's value align with the vision and groundwork Macdonald has laid in Seattle over the past three seasons.

Macdonald said, "Connectivity, attention to detail, like the chasing edges, type of mentality. He didn't use those words verbatim, but he might as well have. How we want to run off the football, tactically there's a lot of similarities as well, how we do business and it felt like he'd be a great partner to work with."

This will be Fleury's first time calling offensive plays, having called both defensive and special teams play in the college ranks.

"At some point, all play callers have to be first time play callers," Macdonald said. "You could tell how Brian thinks about the game. I mean, look, you're going to have to grow into any new role, but we have a lot of great people around here and a lot of great opportunities for them to get ready to go. I'm really confident he's going to be off and running sooner or later. So, yeah, I'm excited about. It's going to be a fun process to build this thing."
