Making Connections: Players, Coaches And Other Ties Between The Seahawks & Texans

With the NFL being so interconnected, it’s always easy to find connections between players, coaches, hometowns and more. Here are some interesting ties between Seattle and Houston. 

Seahawks-Vs-Texans-Connections

The Seahawks host the Texans at Lumen Field on Monday for their Monday Night Football matchup. This will be just the sixth meeting between the two clubs since the Texans inaugural season in 2002. Here are connections between the two opponents.

Player And Coaching Connections

Jaxon Smith-Njigba and C.J. Stroud

Probably the most recognizable connection between the Seahawks and the Texans will be the reunion of two former college teammates in Jaxon Smith-Njigba and CJ Stroud who played together for Ohio State from 2020-2022. The two set school records for Ohio State, broke Big Ten records and helped Ohio State's offense rank amongst the best during their tenure. The two also put on one of the best Rose Bowl performances to date. Smith-Njigba set Rose Bowl records finishing the game with 347 receiving yards on 15 receptions and three touchdowns. He was named offensive player of the game for that performance. Stroud threw for 573 yards and six touchdowns.

Klint Kubiak, son of former Texans head coach Gary Kubiak

While Klint himself does not a have a direct tie to the Texans, his dad is a former head coach for the Texans, having coached Houston from 2006-13.

Shaquill Griffin

While he's back this season for his second stint with the Seahawks, Shaquill Griffin had a few stops along the way before making it back to Seattle. Griffin spent part of the 2023 season with the Texans and appeared in 10 games.

Eric Saubert

Also spending time with the Texans in 2023 was tight end Eric Saubert. He played nine games for Houston that year, contributing mostly on special teams.

Josh Jones

Outside of playing football at the University of Houston, offensive lineman Josh Jones also spent time with the Texans in 2023, appearing in 13 games that season.

Rick Dennison, Seahawks run game coordinator/senior offensive advisor

Rick Dennison spent three of his 29 years of NFL experience with Houston as the offensive coordinator from 2010-13.

John Benton, Seahawks offensive line coach

John Benton served as the Texans' offensive line coach for eight seasons from 2006-13, spending a few of those seasons coaching with Dennison.

Texans players Laken Tomlinson, Mario Edwards and Darrell Taylor all spent time with the Seahawks, with Taylor being drafted by Seattle in 2020.

Deep Cuts

Jerrod Johnson, Texans quarterbacks coach

Jerrod Johnson spent a very brief time on the Seahawks roster while he was in the league. Seattle signed Johnson in April 2013 and released Johnson in June of that year after signing Tarvaris Jackson.

Bill Lazor, Texans senior offensive assistant

Bill Lazor served as Seattle's quarterbacks coach from 2008-09.

Hometown Connections

Jalen Milroe is from Houston, Texas

Teammates To Opponents

LSU teammates

Seahawks right guard Anthony Bradford, Texans right guard Ed Ingram and Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. all attended LSU together and were part of the 2019 National Championship winning team.

Alabama teammates

Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe, Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. and linebacker Christian Harris were all teammates at Alabama.
