GLENDALE—On Thursday night, Seahawks kicker Jason Myers went two-for-two on field goal attempts, nailing both a 44-yard and 31-yard field goal, before missing a 53-yard attempt that almost proved to be costly as the Arizona Cardinals tied up the game 20-20 with 38 seconds left in the game.
As the clock ticked down from four seconds, Myers drilled a 52-yard field goal for the Seahawks to win 23-20 on a walk-off score.
"I felt a little bit more responsibility for that one," Myers said on his game-winning field goal. "I love to come through for the guys, so not being able to, but getting an opportunity, definitely felt like a little bit more that I needed to come through for the guys."
As Mike Morris was leaving the field after the game, he was chanting "J-My, J-My." A couple players also left the field shouting Myers' name.
"I've seen Jason do it so many times," Drake Thomas said. "It's just like automatic at this point. He goes out there, and I think everybody has all the confidence in the world that he's going to go make that game winner."
Before tonight, Myers made both of his 50+ yard field goals this season.
"He (has) ice in his veins," head coach Mike Macdonald said. "We knew he was going to make that kick… I think the whole sideline knew."
After a 22-yard reception by Jaxon Smith-Njigba and a four-yard run by Zach Charbonnet, Myers was set up to kick a 52-yarder to put the game away.
"Just staying true to my routine," is what Myers said was going through his mind. "Didn't try changing anything. Just stay to my routine. That's what I prepare for all offseason and all week. Just trusting it and then just letting it rip."
His teammates had all the trust that he was going to come through when it mattered most.
Quarterback Sam Darnold said, "That's 'J-My'. I don't mean to keep bringing up golf, but I golfed with him this offseason and that's his mentality in golf too. He'll hit a bad shot and he'll come back and stripe the next one. He has that mentality. He gets pretty frustrated when he doesn't make them but then he comes back and it's almost automatic when you know that he's going to go in and knock the next one down."
Myers added, "I trust myself. I trust Stolley [Chris Stoll], I trust Dicko [Michael Dickson]. I'm putting 100 percent commitment into every kick. Sometimes they don't fall, but you just got to keep going."
