During the first quarter of Seattle's preseason matchup against the Tennessee Titans, Seattle's backup offense was working like a well-oiled machine against Tennessee's starting defense. The Seahawks offense, led by Drew Lock built a 16-3 lead thanks to an Elijah Arroyo 36-yard touchdown, as well as a 69-yard rushing touchdown by Jacardia Wright.
Wright said they had an idea they'd be playing against their starters when he had seen defensive tackle Jefferey Simmons on the field.
"Yeah, we had an idea seeing that big number 98 (Jeffery Simmons) was out there. So yeah, we had an idea that we was going to play against their first team defense. It was just basically just get the ball downhill for sure. And that's what I wanted to do."
On his touchdown run, which was well blocked, Wright said he just saw a hole and took it.
"Honestly, our coach tells us to stay A gap on counterplays, stay A gap, and then saw a little hole off to the right," he said. "And shoot, seen nothing but green grass and a touchdown. So I took it."
Arroyo who was one of the blockers on that play, creating a lane for Wright, said he was on the ground so he missed the majority of the play.
"I love that it takes all 11 of us," Arroyo said. "We all went out there and did our job. It wasn't perfect by any means, but we went out there, we did what we were supposed to do, gave effort. And shoot, I fell to the ground. I looked up and he's running on the 20-yard line."
And for Wright, the blocks by the tight ends and receivers didn't go unnoticed.
"Those are the relentless details that we hone in on each and every day," he said. "That was big for him to get that block because that's really what sprung a 69-yard run.
Head coach Mike Macdonald said, "I'm sure there's some great things on that play. Honestly, I heard the call, and I saw the run. I don't know all the other things that happened, but there's got to be some good stuff to go untouched right down the pipe. But you got to be decisive. You got to hit it in the A-gap and read it out A, B, C. So J-Wright (Jacardia Wright) did that, it was cool."
Wright, who was on Seattle's practice squad last season, finished the game with 81 yards on eight carries and added 12 yards on three receptions.
"I think he's still coming back a little bit from his injury, but he's been a great teammate," Macdonald said. "He's been here the whole time. He works his tail off. He's got a great opportunity in front of him. But he's a heavier back that can run, and he's got good hands out of the back field, too, so that's kind of a cool combination of skills."
