Head coach Mike Macdonald returned to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center for a quick turnaround on Tuesday to meet with the media following Monday's 27-19 win over the Houston Texans.
"It's been a whirlwind," Macdonald said. "However many hours it's been, but going into the bye (week), a lot of positive things from the tape, like we talked about last night. There are a lot of things to work on, which is great. It's a good position to be in, figuring out ways to win games when you also feel like you have a lot of room to grow as well. The importance of this week is we get some rest, we regroup, get a great feel for the things that we're doing well, things we need to improve on, and then have a great plan of attack going into next week."
Here are injury updates and other notes from Macdonald's press conference.
Injury Updates & Who To Expect Back After The Bye
Coming out of Monday's game, Macdonald said Devon Witherspoon, Julian Love and Derick Hall should return after the bye. And on Tuesday, Macdonald gave more updates on other injured players. Right now, there is no update on Dareke Young who left the game with a hip injury. As for fullback Robbie Ouzts, who was placed on injured reserve after Week 3, has a chance to return after the bye.
"Let's walk before we run here, but there's a shot of him coming back," Macdonald said.
Macdonald also gave an update on Johnathan Hankins and Christian Haynes .
"Not Hank (Johnathan Hankins)," Macdonald said for his return, "but Christian (Haynes) we'll see."
And for defensive end Rylie Mills who's been on the non-football injury list since the beginning of the season, "I think we're looking at probably within a month to six weeks we should know what's going on."
Self-Scouting During The Bye
Seattle's bye week will give Macdonald and the rest of the Seahawks staff time to rest, but also take some time away to do some self-scouting. Since his first season as head coach, Macdonald said his approach to self-scouting this time around will be a bit different.
"I think we have a better idea of just how we do things and who we are. To me, it's a function of where we need to go, how can we go into focus on some certain things, what we're asking the guys to do, who's doing it, all those things. I don't think we need to be reinventing the wheel. But I think there's things that we need to attack as well."
Getting A Fully Healthy Defense After The Bye
Since Week 1, the Seahawks haven't been at full strength when it comes to the defense, and the bye week is a good break to give players extra rest to come back after the bye refreshed and healthy. Even though Seattle hasn't played a game yet with a fully healthy defense, they have fared relatively well through seven weeks. But Macdonald is looking forward to continuity for the defense.
"We get excited about all our guys," Macdonald said. "I'd be more excited about continuity and having the same crew there all the time. I think that's really important. I think that's one of the things you've seen even over the last three weeks without Spoon (Devon Witherspoon) and Julian (Love). Ty Okada's been stacking those reps, Drake's (Thomas) playing next to each other like that. Nick's (Emmanwori) getting used to hearing the calls from Coby (Bryant) and Ernest (Jones IV) and working with the corners. You've got to play the hand that you're dealt as well, and the guys that have been able to step in are working to make sure that chemistry stays alive when we're out there."
Sam Darnold Once Again Show He Is "Unflappable"
Darnold so far this season has showed that he has a toughness to him and Monday's game was no different. Yes, Darnold turned the ball over twice, once with an interception and the second time fumbling the ball after being sacked. But he also connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a touchdown in the first quarter, throwing in a tight window between two defenders, while also staying in the pocket and facing pressure from the Texans' defense.
"We know he's tough, but when he does that, he shows he's tough," Macdonald said. "I think our guys respect him for it, and I think he shows he has a lot of faith in our receivers as well. The trust in the timing of the play, trust where they're supposed to be, when they're supposed to be there, and you have to be able to make those plays to put points on the board. That was a heck of a throw and catch on Jaxon's (Smith-Njigba) touchdown."
After Darnold's second turnover of the game, he connected with Smith-Njigba again, this time for a deep pass down the sideline for 26 yards.
On Darnold's resiliency, Macdonald said, "It's incredibly important. I'm not the one talking to Sam (Darnold) between each drive and our coaches do a great job talking to him, but he's unflappable back there. He's probably just upset as anybody about turning the ball over or not making a throw. We know he's going to go back out and make plays. We weren't worried about it one bit."
