Fantasy Insider: Your Week 9 Survival Guide

Scott Engel at RotoExperts.com previews Week 9 around the NFL from a fantasy football perspective.

Scott Engel of RotoExperts.com is in his seventh season of Fantasy Football analysis on seahawks.com. He can be heard on FNTSY Radio every morning and seen on FNTSY Sports Network daily on CenturyLink's sports package and Dish Network.

As we did last week, we help you navigate through another very challenging Fantasy week with six teams on a bye again. The Patriots, Steelers, Chargers and Vikings are off, and of lesser impact, the Bears and Browns are also getting a break. So we help you compensate for not having Tom Brady, Le'Veon Bell, Melvin Gordon, Adam Thielen, Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski and others. Many owners won't be able to field an ideal lineup this week, but that does not mean you cannot come out with an important victory if you're prepared and informed. We set you up with prime and sneaky replacement options for some of your key usual starters.

Quarterbacks

Jared Goff vs. NYG:The second-year passer has evolved to the point where he can apparently take advantage of a friendly matchup, and this is one in New Jersey. The Rams have improved receiving depth this year and the Giants allow 19.09 Fantasy Points Per Game to opposing quarterbacks on NFL.com, third most among NFC teams.

Brett Hundley vs. DET: He should be better than he was in his first start, and the Packers still have an impressive crew of pass-catchers. After a week off to get more comfortable with the offense and facing a Lions team that has allowed the fifth-most passing yards in the NFC (1,878), Hundley could at least deliver an adequate Fantasy outing.

Jameis Winston vs. NO: The Saints have an opportunistic defense and that could lead to some turnovers, but Winston's shoulder has reportedly improved and he may gun the ball enough to overcome any interceptions.

Running Backs

Adrian Peterson vs. SF: With Carson Palmer no longer available, the Cardinals have the ideal situation to focus on the running game and take pressure off the quarterback. The 49ers allow 25.45 FFPG to opposing running backs on NFL.com, the most in the league. Peterson's numbers this week could look like they did in his prime years with the Vikings.

Kenyan Drake vs. OAK: After Jay Ajayi was traded to Oakland, Drake, who was previously No. 2 on the Miami depth chart, will get the first chance to take over as the new lead RB. He has some promise as a speedy and versatile performer, and the Raiders allow 19.59 FFPG to opposing RBs, third most among AFC teams on NFL.com. Their 901 rushing yards allowed are second-most in the conference.

Joe Mixon vs. JAX: The rookie should get enough touches and volume to deliver a respectable Fantasy outing, especially in PPR formats. The Jaguars defense is scary for opposing QBs, but they have allowed 830 rushing yards to RBs so far, which is seventh-highest in the NFL. Even if Mixon does not rush for a high amount of yardage, he could boost his totals with a decent amount of catches.

Devontae Booker vs. PHI:This is a deeper PPR play, but the Eagles have allowed the most receptions to opposing running backs in the NFL (52). Booker is the Broncos' best pass-catching running back. He is starting to make his presence felt more in the Denver backfield and he could continue to see a progressively increasing workload this week.

Wide Receivers

Ted Ginn Jr. vs. TB:He has scored nearly 34 standard Fantasy Points on NFL.com over the past three games and now gets a prime matchup with a Tampa Bay defense that allows 26.49 FFPG to WRs, second most in the NFC. Ginn has been coming on as a key part of the Saints passing game in recent weeks.

DeSean Jackson vs. NO:Winston needs to start hitting some big plays to get the offense rolling again, and that starts with getting the ball to Jackson. The Saints have allowed 1,055 receiving yards to opposing WRs, third most among NFC teams.

Marvin Jones vs. GB:He is Matthew Stafford's preferred deep threat right now, and the Packers' secondary is a somewhat inviting matchup. The Pack has allowed 21.86 FFPG to opposing WRs, fourth most among NFC teams on NFL.com.

Curtis Samuel vs. ATL:He is healthy, and there has been much buzz around the Panthers that they want to unleash this exciting rookie. This could be the week when he breaks out. Samuel is a much deeper league play, but if you are desperate for a fill-in, you should follow the whispers and take the shot.

Tight Ends, Kickers & Defense/Special Teams

Tyler Higbee is worth a look against the Giants, who continue to lead the NFL with 13.83 FFPG allowed to TEs. … Jonnu Smith could be the top TE target for the Titans this week. … Blair Walsh should be quite prolific for the Seahawks against Washington. … Adam Vinatiericould be good for more than two field goals against Houston. … Tennessee and Baltimore could be involved in a low scoring affair. The Ravens have a NFL-high 12 interceptions. ... The Saints could be good for some sacks and turnovers against Tampa Bay even if they yield a few TD passes.

Seahawks Fantasy Focus

Russell Wilson is the Top Fantasy QB of the week in my Week 9 Lineup Rankings. He is matchup proof right now and is the crux of the Seahawks offense. Washington is best in the NFC against opposing WRs on NFL.com (15.44 FFPG allowed) but their defense may spend a lot of time on the field, and that means Doug Baldwin will stack up the catches for PPR leaguers. Paul Richardson is a consistent TD threat and a must start as Wilson will look to him both downfield and in the red zone. Tyler Lockett is a good bye week play to catch passes underneath and over the middle. Washington allows 10.93 FFPG to opposing TEs, second most in the NFC, and Jimmy Graham will keep rolling. The Seahawks defensive line will be a real force vs. the Washington front, and the unit is an elite start again this week. Expect more pressure from Frank Clark, and it will be very difficult for Washington to run the ball against Bobby Wagner and the interior. Kirk Cousins could be forced into many adverse passing situations and this could be a big Fantasy day for the Seahawks defense.
