Seahawks vs. Patriots Super Bowl Injury Report

Mike Macdonald's Culture Is Founded On Familiar Seahawks Principles, But With A Unique Spirit

Family. Connectedness. Having each other's back.

These are all keys to the culture Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has built in Seattle that has gotten the team to being a win away from being crowned Super Bowl champions.

The words, which may just sound like sports buzzwords that could be used to describe any locker room, aren't just words the coaches or players throw around, they're filled with real meaning, emotions and were intentionally implemented by Macdonald.

When Macdonald was hired to be the head coach of the Seahawks two years ago, he was taking the reins of a team and locker room that already had an established culture that'd been in place for 14 seasons under Pete Carroll. There was a balance for Macdonald to keep the original undertone of the Seahawks, while also adding in his own style.

Sam Darnold Focused On Helping Seahawks Win A Super Bowl, Not Vindication

There are so many good storylines involving Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold as he prepares to play in his first Super Bowl.

If only he were interested in any of them.

If Darnold, the former No. 3 pick of the New York Jets, can lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl win, he can stick it to anyone who ever called him a bust, right? If he plays like he did two weeks earlier, leading the Seahawks to an NFC championship game win over the Rams, he can show the world that he is an elite big-game quarterback, something people questioned about him last year after the Vikings season ended with two straight losses. Surely that motivates Darnold, yes? And after winning 14 regular-season games in consecutive seasons, earning Pro-Bowl honors each year, surely Darnold would love to remind not one, not two, not three, but four teams that they once had him on their roster and chose to move on, right?

How Seattle's Practice Squad & Depth Players Was Seattle's Superpower This Season

When you look at Seattle's roster, it's not filled with superstars or big-name players. Yes, there are All-Pro and Pro Bowl-caliber players, but it is filled with linebackers who step into starting roles, safeties who can play in place of injured players and offensive linemen who can step in at the end of the season for an injured starter.

The depth of Seattle's roster is something that head coach Mike Macdonald takes pride in and it shows in how prepared every player is to step up at any time.

Linebacker Drake Thomas, an undrafted free agent, who's been with Seattle since 2023, stepped into a starting role this season after an injury sidelined Tyrice Knight during training camp. Thomas played in all 17 regular season games, starting 14 of them and every playoff game. In his first two seasons with Seattle, Thomas was mostly a special teams player.

So how did a special teams player take over a starting defensive role?
