The Seahawks returned back to Seattle following their 38-14 win over the Commanders.
Here are four things we learned from Macdonald's press conference after Sunday's road trip for Sunday Night Football:
1. Injury Updates On Ernest Jones IV.
During Seattle's win on Sunday, Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV left the game with a knee injury and did not return. After the game, Macdonald said the injury did not seem to be season ending.
"No update," Macdonald said on Monday. "They're doing the medical right now. Probably stick to the same story as last night as non-season ending. We're going to be working through his knee, and we'll have an update probably on Wednesday on what the technicality is behind it."
2. Mike Macdonald Making History As Head Coach.
Sunday's win marked Seattle's 11th road win in the first 12 games with Macdonald as the head coach and he joined rare company to become the third NFL coach to do so alongside Sean McVay and George Seifert.
"I mean it's cool," he said. "It's a cool stat. I'm worried about where we're going to go from here. It's cool that we've done it, but as a head coach, you probably get too much credit, too much blame. This is a team operation when we go on the road. When we got here, it was, 'Okay, how is it?' Because the team had success on the road before I was here. So, I was curious, 'Hey, what are the things that we were doing prior?' A lot of that stuff we've kept, that we felt were aligned with how we wanted to operate. I had experience from one place of how we did it in Baltimore. So, that was probably the blueprint of everything we did initially. Then you start, okay, well, what's best for the Seahawks? Going east is way different than going west, you're learning that. We've got a lot of firepower behind the scenes making these things happen as well, and those people deserve a lot of credit."
3. Opposing Defenses Putting Emphasis on Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba has hit 100 receiving yards in six of eight games this season. Despite teams knowing that Smith-Njigba is going to be a large part of Seattle's offensive production, the opponents emphasis on Smith-Njigba just allows other players more opportunities.
"It's interesting," Macdonald said. "There are different mechanisms based off the defensive systems you're in that teams can get to, to take receivers away based on the situation. First, give credit to our offensive coaches for moving [Smith-Njigba] around and making him a moving target. But if you're going to spend a lot of resources on making sure he doesn't catch the ball, then our guys are showing that they can take advantage of those opportunities in those one-on-ones and Sam (Darnold) can deliver the ball to them. It's great, something that we're going to still have to take advantage of. I know if we were game planning against us that would be one of our top priorities is taking care of Jax (Jaxon Smith-Njigba), and I'm sure teams are thinking the same thing, so that's something we need to be taking into account moving forward."
4. The Seahawks Success With Pass Protection.
On Sunday, Darnold played a mistake free first half, statistically, throwing for a perfect 16-of-16 passes for 282 yards and four touchdowns. While Darnold orchestrated those 282 yards and four touchdowns, it was the offensive line, holding up in pass protection, that allowed Darnold to see that kind of success.
"Our offensive line, they deserve some love," Macdonald said. "They're playing really hard. I loved how they operated and practiced last week. They did a great job, and the pass protection is a product of that. The thing I would say is that if you're going to say pass rush is an 11-man job and how you affect the quarterback, pass protection is the same thing. The timing of plays, how we identify pressures, the protection, how we execute protections, how we get the spots on the field, and Sam (Darnold) getting through his progressions, there's a lot of trust involved. There's a lot of work involved to make sure that timing comes to life. They're doing a great job, protecting Sam. I think we're staying square. We're being firm in the pocket, which is letting Sam do his thing back there. They definitely deserve some love."
Seattle's nine sacks allowed this season are tied with the Denver Broncos for fewest in the league.
